A delayed report from Bristol

We also had a recent report from Kit, G5KIT in Bristol which we’ve just got around to posting up now. He’s cleared out the cleavers from his herb corner above (which is well up our street!) and as he told us “surprisingly, the parsley is thriving underneath. The anti-cat sticks seem to still be doing their thing, too.” “I’ll probably pop some basil, mint and thyme in there around the parsley, just so there’s something vigorous to fight the weeds off.”

That’s a great idea and we do know mint can be a bit vigorous at times, but we’ve got a couple of mint plants in the garden that are still in their original pots (buried into the soil) that helps to keep them from spreading too much.

Cheers Kit, do keep letting us know how things are doing!

Dave visited Bristol too

We also had a report from Kit, G5KIT from Bristol who was telling us that “Storm Dave is definitely making his presence felt, and it’s just been too windy to do anything other than see how much ground the cleavers have claimed in their battle for the parsley patch (below). Instead, we’ve been entertained by watching the magpies and crows battling for tactical supremacy in the trees across the road (above)”. Funny enough you say that Kit, as yesterday morning there was some magpies and crow business going on in the trees at the back of us. Are the birds fighting back in the aftermath of Dave?

More underground vibes

A big thanks to Kit, G0JPS who has just returned from a great break on the Grand Union Canal and has sent us a report, alongside some tunes and pictures.

He mentioned in his last email that they were going to navigate the Blisworth Tunnel (the great picture above) and here’s his findings. “The tunnel was really awesome. At 2.8 Km long (that’s 3076 yards or 1 and 3/4 miles in old money) and about 140 feet below ground, it’s not surprising that no shortwave radio signals can be heard in there. I did try!” Brilliant Kit, that you tried the shortwave.

“It takes about 40 minutes to travel through. Some of it is lined with old brick, and some lined with concrete rings (interesting fact – this concrete lining was used as a trial for the channel tunnel lining).” Sounds like a great experience.

“At the very nice village of Stoke Bruerne, just below the Southern portal, by the canal museum, there is a lovely herb garden where we pinched a bit of fennel to liven our chicken dinner up.” Brilliant Kit, that is such a good idea, a community herb garden.

Cheers for that Kit and do keep updating us! Here’s two very apt great tunes he chose for us.

Radio connects us all

Cheers to Kit, G0JPS presently on a boat on the Grand Union Canal who told us earlier he was listening to the “Alt Universe Top 40” on 9670 kHz on his XHDATA D-808 portable. As he reported: “Lovely reception. Hot Butter’s seminal track, “Popcorn” is currently playing.” Brilliant stuff Kit!

Then around the same time we heard from Debby H who picked up a couple of pepper plants from a few streets away (there was a mixture of plants on a wall with a sign “please take me” on it) and guess what one of the varieties was called? Marconi Red. Radio (and gardening) connects us all!

A report from Bristol

Thanks to Kit, G0JPS in Bristol for letting us know he did a bit of garden clearance yesterday (Easter Sunday) which included “removing a huge tangle of cleavers (if the name isn’t familiar, you’d know what they are straight away when you see the picture of them) and the sad deceased remnants of a fuchsia bush.”

“Found this nice little sectioned off bit (above) under the wreckage; so gave it a good hoeing, sowed it with foxglove seeds, and rehomed a small thyme plant rescued from a supermarket car park. And pinched your idea of sticks and things to keep the cats off.” Brilliant Kit, we love your choice of metal sticks and wood that will keep the cats and probably the foxes off too we reckon.

He added  “Thinking that it’s a bit of a blank slate now, the words Tabula Rasa popped into my mind so here’s a couple of tune suggestions:”

They are two excellent tunes that we’d never heard before. The first is Tabla Rasta who were from Crete with Mystic Dub and Brother Dan from Sweden with Bay Leaf and Thyme Dub. Excellent musical recommendations Kit, do keep them coming!
