One station returns while another one leaves us

It’s heavy on radio transmissions this month with the return of DJ Frederick’s Free Radio Skybird on Sunday 13th September at 1100 UTC (12 Noon UK time) on 6070 kHz shortwave via Channel 292 (and repeated the week after.) If you haven’t got a suitable radio it can also be heard on the SDR link on their site here. The first programme will feature DJ Frederick, Justin Patrick Moore’s Radiophonic Laboratory and our very own One Deck Pete with his “Who’d be a pirate” mix. 49 metres is again where it’s all at!

Also Sunday 27th September 2020 (and repeated the week after) at 1800 UTC (7pm UK time) on 3955 kHz via Channel 292 is the final transmission of Radio Lavalamp. The ultimate programme of the year will feature One Deck Pete with his The Purple Nucleus of Creation 003 mix. Satellite’s gone up to the skies

Tune in this Saturday 5th September from 3-6 pm Eastern Time (8-11 pm UK time) to Lord Kelvin the Harmonic Analyst on Trash Flow Radio on WAIF 88.3 FM, Cincinnati (listen on their radio player here.)

Lord Kelvin will be presenting a 3 hour homage to the Japanese ambient music satellite St. GIGA that ran for ten years from 1990. Weed’s very own One Deck Pete has contributed the Rule of the Twelfths mix which will be aired during the first hour of the program. Tune in on Saturday and sail away into space. Here’s a sneak preview of a forthcoming transmission from DJ Frederick’s Radio Lavalamp (“We’re bridging the gap between mystery and science. You’ve tuned to a cosmic flow of Radio Lavalamp on shortwave”) which will be broadcast on Sunday 12th July at 2200 UTC (11pm UK time) on 3955 kHz via Channel 292 in the 75 metre band.

The transmission features our own One Deck Pete who supplied an experimental mix for the station called “The Purple Nucleus of Creation 001” which is at 21.48 minutes in on the soundcloud below.

This Sunday 21st June sees the last in the present schedule of DJ Frederick’s Free Radio Skybird until the autumn. So tune in at 1100 UTC on 6070 kHz in the 49 Metre shortwave band via Channel 292 and if you haven’t got a suitable radio it can also be heard on the SDR link on their site here.

Here’s a mono recording off an online SDR earlier today of the second in the series of One Deck Pete’s “Tunes to cheer you up” which was transmitted on Free Radio Skybird via Channel 292 on 6070 kHz. The tune is Ceremony by Mikhail Ovez, the Mark Gaetani Remix on Zedanubi Records. The comments “Why ain’t it in dolby stereo?” and “It isn’t even a clear recording so why bother?” don’t count as it came to us here via the ionosphere on those there short waves.

Can’t stop it!

It’s been a nice day today and judging by the weather forecast (above) it will be a bit warmer than last night. So that’s why the protection from the cold has been put on in a nonchalant fashion? Fingers crossed there’ll be no frost tonight then as B&Q bargain buckets balanced on top of potato plants and polythene “sort of” put over raised beds aren’t going to do that much!

And as there were problems with the last transmission, this Sunday will see the Free Radio Skybird show that was promised last week being broadcast, which features One Deck Pete with Tunes to cheer you up at 28 minutes in. Here’s an “off the radio” recording of One Deck Pete’s “Radio fanatics of the world unite” mix as broadcast on Free Radio Skybird this morning via Channel 292 on shortwave. “Tune in and rip the knob off” as Bill Mitchell use to say on various pirate radio station jingles in the 1990’s.

Here’s a lovely piece of radio-related graphics which we received the other week thanks to DJ Frederick. It’s a Free Radio Skybird log book designed and produced by the graphic artist NanSea Griggs. It’s an excellent hand-crafted booklet in a folded over card cover which is a collaged, hand stamped, one-off piece which we love here! Have a look at her other work for the cassette label whythetapesplay. Designwise it’s a refreshing breathe of fresh air which makes us shout “Bring back the Prittstick, PVA and the John Bull printing kit to graphic design!”

Just a reminder that Free Radio Skybird will be on the air tomorrow Sunday 29th March at 1100 UTC (1200 UK) on 6070 kHz via Channel 292. The programme will feature Justin Patrick Moore’s Radiophonic Laboratory (at 10 mins in) and One Deck Pete’s “Radio fanatics of the world unite” mix (at 25 mins in) and other interesting stuff. If you haven’t got a shortwave radio tune in here and enjoy something “a little way different” as they say.
