JNHK calling

There hasn’t been much gardening done this week what with that cold spell we’re having that is testing the elephant garlic, the foxglove plugs and all of the garden. If you want something decent to listen to while you’re stuck indoors you can’t go wrong with last night’s transmission of JNHK from The Imaginary Stations collective below.

It’s a great show with a mix of all sorts of Japanese related tunes from Justin Patrick Moore and DJ Frederick and at 09.33 a mix from One Deck Pete called “Big in Japan” and here’s the tracks:

All about the weather

And we’ve been complaining about the weather today. A big thanks to our good music/radio friend across the pond Justin Patrick Moore for getting in touch. Here’s what his back garden in Cincinnati looks like at the moment. Now that is cold. Thank goodness there’s no elephant garlic been planted in his garden lately as they wouldn’t stand a chance. Whilst looking for some tunes for a forthcoming shortwave mix we found an excellent tune from Ax Martz out of Mexico City called Coded Messages which samples a couple of well known number stations. It’s an uptempo tune as well and one that will bring a smile to you face!

And they’re not interested in Amateur Radio then?

On the radio this evening is a transmission celebrating shortwave radio by the Imaginary Stations crew. It’s broadcast at 2300 UTC on 9395 kHz by WRMI and is called Kearsarge North Transmission Service (KNTS). Expect some ham radio/shortwave themed music, numbers stations and Ionosphere Jazz. Here’s more about the transmission tonight:

At 15.43 into the show there’s a shortwave inspired mix from One Deck Pete featuring tunes from Shortwave Sounds, Kwook, Jodey Kendrick, Yomakomba and a shortwave exclusive of a remix of Nocturnal Emissions by Madtone. After the transmission a recording of the show will be available on their mixcloud site here.

The days when the lute ruled

Tomorrow Sunday 6th November 2022 from 2300 UTC on 9395 kHz shortwave there will be another episode of WREN in a renaissance style. The hour long show will include tunes with “harmony that places a greater concern on the smooth flow of the music and its progression of chords.”

There’s another mix in a renaissance style from One Deck Pete at 17 minutes in featuring: Beyond the Wizards Sleeve, Deega, O.G. Jigg and Baroque Baroque. Tune in and enjoy another journey back to the time when the lute was all over the musical charts.

The numbers station disco connection

A record came out of the blue here for no reason at all this evening, the excellent New York Shine On Me! off the Ambient House (The Compilation By DFC) LP which we first heard on the John Peel show.

It’s a lovely acid tinged number with a driving kick drum made by someone called Aqua Regia (a chap called Akin Fernandez) originally released on Akin’s record label Irdial Discs. Little did we know at the time there would be a shortwave radio connection and also one with The Ritchie Family of “The Best Disco in town” fame as it was only tonight in the comments of the youtube we discovered the sample. You learn something new every day.

Imaginary Stations on RTM.FM

Big shout to all at RTM.FM in Thamesmead, south east London for broadcasting the Imaginary Stations show monthly from this Saturday at 6pm UK time online here.

And here’s one tune to lift the spirits. It’s from the mighty Mighty Sparrow (aka Slinger Francisco ORTT CM OBE) called Tour of Jamaica. With lyrics like the below it’s quite hard to beat!
“Look at confusion, rum punch in meh hand
I drink one and beg for one moreBut when ah catch mehself, I drink about four”
If all goes well the sparrow will be singing his way through the ionosphere on the shortwaves soon. As the song goes “‘Til we meet again bye-bye!”
