Dig this 2015

It’s short notice, but this year’s Happy Seeds Festival/Tomato Planting Extravaganza takes place tomorrow, Saturday 16 May from 11am – 6pm at St James’s, New Cross Gate London SE14 6AD (next to Goldsmiths University and St James Hatcham Primary School) and it’s FREE!

The event will feature 90 varieties of tomato plants (90, how mad is that?) alongside 50 varieties of potted herbs and loads of seeds for sale. There’s lots of activities like making planting boxes, music, workshops on seed paper making, cooking, food, a beekeeping demonstration, local honey for sale and a fund raising book stall.

Happy Seeds/Dig This Nursery know a thing or two about growing tomatoes and sounds like a great day out, so pop down if you get a chance!

A quick reminder of the event we’re hosting tomorrow night (Friday 7th November) at LimeWharf, Vyner Street, London E2 9DJ. It’s a free session of Reggae, Disco, Soul and Funk with The Rhythm Doctor, One Deck Pete and Hayereyah on the mike. The night starts at 6pm and goes on till 9pm and it’s FREE! How good is that?

Here’s news of an early session (6pm-9pm) we’re involved in up at LimeWharf early next month. The last one there was great and a good time was had by all, and thanks to all the DJ’s including The Rhythm Doctor and Thea (MADONJAZZ) and Mark G from Penge Jazz who will hopefully be making another appearance with us in the spring/early summer at the venue for another Saturday all-dayer if it all goes well!

So put the date in your diary a free early friday night session of Reggae, Disco, Soul and Funk on 7th November 2014 at LimeWharf, Vyner Street, London E2 9DJ with The Rhythm Doctor, Weeds up to me knees‘ One Deck Pete and Hayereyah on the mike and harmonica. A cheap and early night out!

Big thanks to everyone who attended yesterday’s “The last Saturday of Summer” at Limewharf and for making it a great day out! Big thanks to Emma at Limewharf for sorting it out, Marc B for the idea and The Rhythm Doctor (who played the above), Thea and Mark G for playing some brilliant tunes! It was a perfect venue for getting together and chatting over a few bevies to some great music.

A couple of gardening related things picked up while at Limewharf yesterday. Firstly, thanks to Dell for letting us know about the forthcoming Cordwainers Garden Autumn Show on Saturday 20th September at 182 Mare Street E8 3RE from 11am-3pm. Look’s great, who’s the local celebrity I wonder?

Also thanks to our old musical collaborator, Hayereyah for passing on his new CD with a gardening themed cover. Great rootsy stuff as per from Hayereyah, no gardening pun intended!

The great Summer revival of 2014

Here’s a quick reminder of the event we are staging with the good folks at Limewharf this Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Emma for getting it all sorted at the last minute and to Marc B. for giving us the idea.

Music is from 3-8pm and features some great summer tunes from weeds’ very own One Deck Pete plus our friends Thea (MADONJAZZ), Mark G (Penge Jazz) and all the way from Tallinn, Estonia The Rhythm Doctor. You can bring your kids, it costs zilch and it’s a nice chilled out venue so there’s no excuse. Come down and enjoy the end of summer this Saturday afternoon!

There’s also art, acupuncture and a whole lot more. There’s a film called “Drag is my Ecstasy” about the club night Sink The Pink and an exhibition of work from David Holah of BodyMap. How good is that for a Saturday afternoon!

Big shout to our long time friend The Rhythm Doctor who’s playing a funk/jazz/reggae/disco set at the all-vinyl night Crates Session at Brilliant Corners, 470 Kingsland Rd, London E8 4AE this saturday from 7-12 and it’s Free. How good is that!

Cheers to A Robbins for letting us know of this multi-media installation in SE16 plus a free event on Saturday in Southwark Park. It says in the blurb about even having a facsimile of a living room set up for a Blues Dance, at the end of the 1950s. Great stuff!

A taste of things to come

A couple of good things to look forward to if you’re down the big smoke over the next few weeks. The great Dennis “Blackbeard” Bovell will be playing some tunes upstairs at The Ritzy Cinema, Brixton for nothing (how good is that!) as part of David Katz’ Dub Me Always on Wednesday 9th July. Before then as part of James Lavelle’s Meltdown on Sunday 22nd June there’s a free event down the Southbank called “Sunday Come Down” featuring Don Letts (Not Monty Don), James Lavelle and other top stuff as the day goes on. Let’s hope the weather keeps up. Here’s the line up cribbed from here. I’m sure it’ll change but it gives you clue what to expect.

This Saturday coming (June 14th) there’s a special screening of the Bunny Lee Film “I am the Gorgon” at the BFI, Southbank plus after a Q and A session with the director Diggory Kenrick and the narrator of the film and the legend that is Dennis Alcapone. There’s still a couple of tickets left for £6.50 here. I’m going and if I get a chance I’ll ask Dennis if he’s into gardening!

Salute to Solanum (lycopersicum) pt.3

And for the final part of the tomato triptych, here’s a great event next Saturday organised by Dig This Nursery/Happy Seeds in New Cross as part of the Chelsea Fringe.

It’s a free all-day tomato planting extravaganza with kids making wooden planters, filling them with plants which will be then distributed outside shops in the New Cross area. And how many varieties of Tomato will be planted, do you think? 92! How mad is that? Dig This certainly know a bit about the ‘umble tomato! Have a look here for the varieties they have on sale.

Added to this, there’s food and drink, music, various crafts and 50% discount on tomato plants and off the happy seeds range. More info here. Hopefully soon I will be taking the Dig This challenge and see how my tomatoes get on with their secret weapon (diluted horse manure as liquid feed.)

The event is on the 17th May, 11-6pm at St James’, SE14 6AD, New Cross Gate (one street down from Goldsmiths University). New Cross/New Cross Gate Station.

You take the high road (and I’ll take the flu jab)

Thanks to Lewisham Gardens (it was great meeting you!) for inviting us to the Edible High Road event in Forest Hill last Saturday. Due to having a stinker of a flu combined with an argumentative child in tow, I turned up too early to see Matthew Wilson from GQT but I did see some of the fruit trees in pots with their accompanying herbs, great stuff! I also picked up a couple of freebies that are always appreciated here, three runner beans (from the nice people at friends of Hornimans or Forest Hill Society? sorry I can’t remember which one they were) which went in the back garden as soon as I got home. Only one plant survived the night though (slugs? moths? cats? I have no idea, but they ain’t there now!)

I also got some tomato plants (one a sweet cherry tomato called “Vilma”) from the nice guys at Dig This Nursery in New Cross which is situated next door to the Hobgoblin pub opposite the New Cross Gate train station. It’s a great place, they have plants galore, lots of varieties of tomatoes, their own brand of seeds (Happy Seeds – aimed at the younger market, all with great illustrations, bright packets and info you possibly wouldn’t have known about the plant), some gallery space (to Marc B and Marc G, it might be a good place to show your work) and to cap it all, some boxes of second hand records. What more do you want out of a nursery?

Although I only stayed a short while, it’s brilliant there are events like this, making people more aware of gardening and how easy it is to grow your own food! Big shout to all involved and for the free plants and seeds, ta!
