Gardens in the snow – Number one in a series

Cheers to our good friend The Rhythm Doctor for sending us pictures of his garden in Tallinn, Estonia presently covered with snow and don’t it look great! The pic above is Hortensia (aka Hydrangea) which looks like an upside down chandelier.

The above are three apple trees in a row and a cherry tree to the left of them and the great shot below is a smart looking BBQ oven (with a hat on) standing guard outside the woodshed.

And finally below some blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes. We love these photos!

And Chris picked this apt tune from the great John Holt called “Winter World of Love”, the original performed by some chap called Engelbert Humperdink (the song was written by Barry Mason and also Les Reed, the man responsible for the Radio Northsea theme tune “Man of Action.”)

And here’s a great little mix of the featured tune by the great DJ Algoriddim check his other mixes here.

And not forgetting (below) this week’s edition of The Rhythm Doctor’s Waiting Room on IDA Radio Tallin a wonderful Monday morning show (with reggae, chilled, electronica, jazz and all sorts) from 9 – 11am UK time here. Big shout to Chris RD for playing an extended mix of Jasmine Tutum & Madtone‘s Return To The Branches at 26 mins in and also 1 hour and 10 mins in, their Earth Citizen track. Cheers Chris!

If you fancy sending us a pic of your garden in the snow send us a pic to onedeckpete at gee mail dot com plus a tune of your choice. Cheers!

Big shout to our good mate The Rhythm Doctor for sending us a weather report out of the studio window of IDA Radio, Tallinn this morning. They’ve just had some snow out there and the top temperature in Tallinn for this forthcoming week is predicted to be -5 C. We’re certainly will not be complaining about the weather here!

If you want to listen to something great on a Monday morning tune in here for a two hour selection of Jazz, Reggae, Electronica and downbeat from 9am. It’s a show well worth tuning into!

We heard it on the radio

Cheers to our good friend The Rhythm Doctor for playing this chilled out piece of summer inspired balearica from John Beltran called La Hermosa Vista on his excellent Monday morning radio show “The Rhythm Doctor’s Waiting Room” (all shows available here). If you want two hours containing some great tunes from chilled, funk, reggae, jazz and a lot more on a Monday morning you want to be tuning into IDA RadioTallinn from 9-11am UK time. Here’s this week’s show:

International Herb

Suprise Chefs – Rosemary Hemphill – Big Crown Records

Thanks again to The Rhythm Doctor for pointing us in the right direction of another great tune, this time within a week of the last one! The Suprise Chefs bring us some bright vibes with a great track called Rosemary Hemphill which he played on his show (below) on IDA Radio (Tallinn) last Monday at 50 minutes in.

While the track was playing he decided to google Rosemary Hemphill and to his suprise what he found was another music/gardening connection (and as you know there’s a fair few of them about!)

Turns out Rosemary Hemphill is an “Australian writer of cooking and gardening books, who has long been recognised as one of Australia’s leading herb and spice experts.” She was born at “sunrise” on “April Fool’s Day” in 1922, in Broome, western Australia and in her childhood spent some time at her grandparents in Bromley, UK who had a big herb garden which was a big influence on her. More on the great lady here. She’ll be 101 tomorrow. Happy Birthday!

The big question is are the Suprise Chefs keen gardeners then?

London Bridge is burning down

Big shout to our very good friend The Rhythm Doctor (of The Rhythm Doctor’s Waiting Room on IDA Radio – Tallinn on a Monday morning here) for telling us about this excellent collection on Bandcamp from Don Cavalli.

It’s called Don Cavalli chants down babylon and what an EP it is! There’s 4 top tracks including this above, his interpretation of The Wailers Fire Fire AKA Bunny Wailer’s Love Fire. We implore you to listen to this EP and make a purchase.

From April showers to a dub shower

Big thanks to long-time friend The Rhythm Doctor for pointing us in the direction of this tune the other night, Hold Up Your Head by Errol Carter (aka “Flabba” Holt of the Roots Radics/Morwells) produced by the great Rupie Edwards. With a keyboard sound reminiscent of Unexpected Places by Hortense Ellis it’s a killer of a tune and on the B side a top dub called Tank Skank that the youtube here doesn’t do justice. The single is less than a fiver on discogs so hunt it down! We would like more dub showers on the stereo and less rain in the garden please (or could it rain in the night?).

Spring is just around the corner

Here’s an excellent mix from a good mate of weeds The Rhythm Doctor. It features some lovely tunes including one of a very rare nature; Joe Monsano – Haile Selassie Instrumental off Bullet Dub, a special Rhythm Doctor re-edit of Lizzard – Satta I and the damn right mad The Upsetter – Tipper Special. The full tracklistings are:

Alan Watts – Intro
Beris Bradley – Cool Rock (Slight edit)
The Upsetter – Tipper Special
Rupie Edwards – Feeling Irie
Big Youth – Jim Screechie
Augustus Pablo – Harmony Dub
Light of Saba – Collie Version
The Destroyers – Compass
Geffrey Chang & all stars – U.F.O
Lizzard – Satta I Dub (RD version)
Prince Buster All Stars – Boop
The Morwell – The Giant
Joe Monsano – Haile Selassie Instrumental
Michael Campbell – Home Guard version
Linval Thompson – Mariguana
Blackbeard – Cut after Cut
The Upsetters – Return of the Super Ape
Prince Far I & The Arabs – Homeward Bound
Augustus Pablo – Abyssinia Dub

It’s a mix to stick on loud while sowing those early tomato seeds under a plastic propagator on a warm windowsill indoors. But in the words of the song “Cool it, don’t rush it” as it’s still a bit t’wirley!

Never mind the angle grinders

The builders next door have been at it since just after 8am this morning (and it’s a Saturday as well!) To drown them out this afternoon we’ve been listening to October’s edition of The Rhythm Doctor‘s Estonian Raadio 2 radio show loud (available here). The show includes a load of musical gems as per including this excellent tune from MAMA called Unmask Me remixed by one Ashley Beedle which is a winner. The version is nice too!
