Brand new secondhand

The other day while sorting through a box of old magazines and yellowing punk fanzines we came across a piece we wrote for the good folks at Mojo Collections* (Big shout to Mark Paytress!) many moons ago. Reliving the memories of some of the best second hand record vendors from the past really made us smile. We are presently writing a piece about all the crazy things we’ve experienced while downloading MP3’s, so do look out for that as it’s looking quite lively at the moment! Below are the fine tunes that are featured in the Article.

Have you memories of a second-hand record emporium that smelt of rising damp, a sheepskin-coat wearing market stall vendor whose records had no prices on them or a favourite mail order outlet that sent you anything other than the record you wanted? A story of a great tune found between piles of such classics as Singalongamax and I missed again at your local charity shop? You once paid an arm and a leg for the Contempo – Black Jade dub LP from the Record and Tape exchange only to find Status Quo’s You’re In The Army Now 12″ when you got it out of its cardboard sleeve on the bus home. Well we would love to hear from you!

Respect goes out to Buster (but not Phil Collins)

It was very sad to hear that the great Prince Buster passed away the other day. Here’s two corking records of his that have been special to us throughout the years from his massive back catalogue.

The above tune was featured on a 1970’s programme about Rastafari that was played very regularly here on video cassette many moons ago. It was reheard a few years later upstairs at a night at The Betsey Trotwood in Farringdon played by one Pete Holdsworth from Pressure Sounds who told us he found his copy in a charity shop in the 1970’s for a few pence. No!!!!!!!

The tune below was obtained in the 1990’s while bringing some some unwanted christmas gifts (including 4 packs of white socks, “no name” after-shave and economy “talc”) to the Scope shop in Camberwell. The chap behind the counter was sorting through a very recent donation of punk and reggae singles and was so chuffed of the contribution of white socks he let me have first dibs. Big up the white sock crew and long live The Prince!

A camberwell beauty

Prince Buster  – Taxation – Fab records white label
Here’s another second-hand classic (with very apt lyrics!) which was found in the Scope shop in Camberwell (42 Denmark Hill, London SE5 1JL) in the late 1990’s. This charity shop still delivers today as the other week I got a Mongo Santamaria greatest hits LP (cuban latin jazz) and Johnny Clarke’s version of  “no woman no cry” on 7″ for £2. How good is that?

Anyway the buster tune was found when I was off-loading some unwanted Christmas presents from the relatives in the midlands (white socks, denim after-shave and a big tin of tea-time assorted biscuits etc). I walked into the shop just as the guy behind the counter was flicking through a bunch of singles which I noticed contained a couple of reggae sevens. He was chuffed I had recognised one of the tunes and also that I had donated some stuff so he let me have the pile of about fifteen singles for a fiver. This was probably one of my best finds of all-time as it included a Wailers 7″ from the late 60’s and some punk singles including Subway Sect’s “Ambition”. Super! The moral of this tale is don’t bin those white socks and that woolly cardigan from your nan, stick them in your local charity shop!
