Stop those Monday morning blues

Big shout to the one and only Rhythm Doctor for playing One Deck & Popular‘s “Enrico” from many moons ago (at 30.56) on his excellent Monday morning “Rhythm Doctor’s Waiting Room” radio show last week on IDA Radio (Tallinn). Cheers!

Tune in tomorrow morning at 9am UK time for the finest in Reggae, Dub, Downbeat, Ambient, Jazz and other great tunes!

What a difference the sun makes

Don’t think buying in tomato plants is in any way cheating. Earlier this year we sowed a few tomato seeds that failed miserably so we bought a couple of varieties from Shannon’s. The cherry ones (above) have done exceptionally well and they’re still going strong as we didn’t pinch out the tops. Big thanks to Shannon’s, we’ll be doing the same next year.

Monday afternoon was so nice we went out in the garden and tidied up one of the scrappy beds and then planted some garlic cloves to overwinter. It’s worth making the most of the weather at the moment as in a months or so’s time it may be dreadful. Here’s the before and after:

And finally a big shout to Steyvn Iron Feather Journal for letting us know about the latest Music’s not for everyone on NTS which features a ten inch vinyl special including One Deck & Popular’s Son of Stitt (Cafe del Bob’s mix) from many moons ago. Big thanks Mr Weatherall! #onedeckandpopular #sonofstitt

Brand new secondhand

The other day while sorting through a box of old magazines and yellowing punk fanzines we came across a piece we wrote for the good folks at Mojo Collections* (Big shout to Mark Paytress!) many moons ago. Reliving the memories of some of the best second hand record vendors from the past really made us smile. We are presently writing a piece about all the crazy things we’ve experienced while downloading MP3’s, so do look out for that as it’s looking quite lively at the moment! Below are the fine tunes that are featured in the Article.

Have you memories of a second-hand record emporium that smelt of rising damp, a sheepskin-coat wearing market stall vendor whose records had no prices on them or a favourite mail order outlet that sent you anything other than the record you wanted? A story of a great tune found between piles of such classics as Singalongamax and I missed again at your local charity shop? You once paid an arm and a leg for the Contempo – Black Jade dub LP from the Record and Tape exchange only to find Status Quo’s You’re In The Army Now 12″ when you got it out of its cardboard sleeve on the bus home. Well we would love to hear from you!

A word to the wiseguy/girl

Dillinger – Ragnampiza – Black Swan
“My name is Ragnampiza and I don’t eat fertilizer” toasted the great Dillinger in the 1970’s and he’s right, I’ve just walked down the garden and smelt the new load of comfrey water fermenting and it don’t half whiff. It’s not the sort of stuff you want to ingest!

On Gardener’s Question Time last week Bob Flowerdew (we’ve been sending him emails on and off for the last year asking for his musical top 5 but he refuses to answer) mentions he cuts his comfrey liquid with stinging nettles and borage to get an all-round plant feed. Big up D.I.Y. liquid fertiliser making if you can put up with the stench!

One Deck & Popular – Son of Stitt – Black Country Route
This tune is nicked off that. I do know, as I know the bloke who ripped it off!

Bob Andy – Chains – Studio 1
But the original tune is nicked off this! Thanks to Mistah Brown for educating us on this classic a few years ago. Tune!

Bob Andy – Set Me Free – High Note
A later redo produced by the late and (very) great Sonia Pottinger. Lovely bonkers organ solo in an (very) non Rick “freemason of lodge 3098” Wakeman stylee.

I want that, I want that…

happy

I’d love to say a big thank you to Lewisham Gardens and Golightly Gardens for their excellent seed swap in Hither Green last night. I had an idea that it would be a good one when I popped into the great Dig It Nursery in New Cross beforehand as I was a bit early, and the owner Mihaly very kindly donated a carrier bags worth of his happy seed range (how good is that?)

Seed swap hither green

It was a nice friendly atmosphere in the Station Hotel, there were a couple of big tables worth of boxes of various envelopes, seed packets, “dealer” bags, plastic bags and folded paper containing all sorts of weird and wonderful seed.

I’m now suffering from the “why didn’t I take some of those” or “had a pack of those” syndrome. It was great to meet up with like-minded people who also enjoy rummaging through boxes of seeds and writing on and taping up paper bags. I also met Theresa of Kitchen Buddy (who told us about a foraging walk on May 25th which sounds interesting see ourhithergreen.com) who I done a good swap of mangetout for a pack of cinnamon basil seed who I found out is a good friend of our old musical collaborator Hayereyah, talk about a small world! Viva la seed swap!
