Around the world in 80 gardens (pt.23)

Ta again to Dr Strangedub for linking us up with another music maker/gardener. This time it’s Martin L Kennedy from the excellent All India Radio from Melbourne, Australia. AIR make some great chilled tunage which Dr Strangedub has been playing on the echo chamber for a long while now.

Thanks to Martin for getting in touch with us and for sending us some photo’s of his mother’s back yard, which is a quality garden featuring some lovely planting!

Here’s what Martin wrote: Here’s some pictures of springtime in an Australian back yard. This is actually my mothers garden where I grew up. Amazingly many of the same plants that were planted when I was young (over 40 years ago) are still growing. Some of them were gifts to my parents, bought from the school fete or nicked from the neighbours gardens!

AIR_2Great stuff Martin, looking good! I still can’t get my head around that it’s nearing the end of the gardening year here and in Australia it’s just beginning. Great stuff!

All contributions gratefully accepted (no seed too small!)

A big shout to Dr Strangedub for being the first contributor to our “Dub Gardeners of the world unite” feature last week. The next one will feature Med Dred from the sunny island of Cyprus with some nice veg (Ta to Dr Strangedub for the link up and Med Dred for saying yes). Watch this space!

You don’t have to be a dub gardener to send us your pics as we’re interested in all gardeners who like any sort of music! Just drop us an email to the address below with some images and a bit of text and we’ll do our best to feature it (windowsill, allotment or whatever you have).

We’re also on the look out for any companies who want to send us seeds, plants, even gadgets which if we like, we’ll give an honest review and pass the word on to all. If you are a company/nursery and want to send us something drop us an email to onedeckpete@gmail.com

Dub gardeners of the world unite!

Image22Garden of the week: Doctor Strangedub’s plot in Minnesota.
Well, going into the second week of October and Dr. Strangedub still hasn’t taken his garden down. Most years we have had a killer frost by now here in Minnesota. Looks like it will be pretty cool tonight (around 45 F/7 C), but still safe for a bit. In the photos are: some green tomatoes still on the vine; some weeds up to my knees; and some very healthy basil plants. Looks like it’s time to make some Italian pesto with me basil….but the tomatoes must ripen in a box before I can make some salsa.

Doctor Strangedub and DJ Baby Swiss present the excellent radio show “The Echo Chamber” on KFAI weekly.

Spirits flying

Dub Gabriel ft. Karen Gibson Roc – Spirit made flesh
Heard on this week’s excellent Echo Chamber an oldie but goodie featuring an Ari Up sample (someone correct me if I’m wrong). A brilliant track which even features what sounds like a shortwave numbers station too (at 4.29 “One Zero, One Zero”) but can’t be sure. Excellent! Big up to Dr Strangedub and DJ Baby Swiss.

Spring, why haven’t you sprung yet?

Dub Chairman in the placeDub Chairman – Soldier (Citadel Records) 2004
Big up to Terry C for playing this on last week’s Echo Beach, a lovely tune from yesteryear reminding me of the best bits of the Thievery Corporation put through the blender with the sound of an ice cream van. Come on Spring where are you, mate? Click here to listen to the tune while pondering when it’s going to get warmer.

Felipe Lopez – Radio Space (Ape.Choons)
Here’s a great track heard on Dr Strangedub and DJ Baby Swiss’ excellent “Echo Chamber” on KFAI a few of weeks ago. The tune is a lovely piece of dub which samples a Brazilian radio amateur communicating with the International Space Station (ISS). The les dubthiers mix (the second clip) just pips the original to the post. Get this tune, you’ll love it! Big shout to Dr Strangedub for this one.

Gardening strange

Big up to our very good friend from across the pond, Doctor Strangedub for his new reggaewise gardening mix first aired on this week’s “Echo Beach” show on WLUW-FM Chicago. It’s an excellent mix of dubwise in a horticultural stylee (he’s a keen gardener as well as a music lover) featuring Prince Far I, Leroy Sibbles, Jah Wobble. Lee Perry, DubXanne (ft. Ranking Roger) amongst other great stuff and includes Madtone’s “Compost your mind”. Dr Strangedub and DJ Baby Swiss’ excellent “Echo Chamber” show is on every Wednesday morning on KFAI and archived on the KFAI Website (http://kfai.org/echochamber). Big up all dub gardeners in the (green) house! A big cheers to Dr Strangedub for including the Madtone track.

There is such a thing as a free lunch pt. 2

A big shout to Dr Strangedub and DJ Baby Swiss of KFAI’s Echo Chamber on their new compilation “Echo Chamber – Around the World In Dub Vol. 1 & 2”, two CDs worth of heavy dubwise, world-wize sounds available as a free download from Dan Dada Records. Featuring some excellent tuneage from Zion Train, Trevor The Technician McKenzie, The Mutant Frogs, Dubmatix, Kukan Dub Lagan and the debut single “Dark Dread” from Madtone (my good gardening self) from a few years back. A perfect compilation for blasting out while chilling out on a summer’s evening in the back garden. Available free from
