Here’s the studio audio from last night’s KTAB, the latest in the Imaginary Radio Stations series transmitted to the world via the valves and wires of WRMI.

At 24 minutes into the recording is One Deck Pete’s “I’ve got those broadcast blues”. Here’s the full track listing of the 15 minute mix complete with the Bandcamp sites the tracks were obtained from. Do check them out as there were a lot of interesting stuff on the labels, Death is not the end feature tons of tunes from Jamaican Doo Wop to Pirate Radio Adverts from the Acid House days and as for Canary Records, there’s a truck load to explore there!

This Sunday the imaginary radio stations crew have a right treat for you. KTAB will be featuring “Yesterday’s music today” on 9395 kHz at 2200 utc on Sunday 31st July 2022 via the magic of the wireless.

The show will feature all sorts of old time music from the year dot to the late 1950’s including a mix called “I’ve got those broadcasting blues” from One Deck Pete at 24 minutes in featuring this classic from Keith & Enid called “Worried over you”. Tune into the shortwave time machine.

Many thanks to Steve Barker again for recommending more great squeezebox tunes, this latest one is a belter! It’s from Los Corraleros de Majagual from Colombia and called Los Sabanales. This video is something else. Cheers Steve, great tunes are always appreciated here at Weeds!

And cheers to DJ Frederick Moe for the following top music tips. Firstly this radio DJ themed one by Houston (Bob) Mills called The Early Morning DJ with the great line: “most people are still sleeping, his wife and kids he leaves at home, it won’t be long before he’s signing on”

And then this wonderful LP of chilled out dub LP by Sumac Dub with the very apt title for us called Le Jardin de Lucy. Cheers for the recommendation Fred, this is a brilliant LP! More on the band here. The title track is a tune!

Welcome back my friends to the WELK that never ends

Thanks to everyone who’ve been sending us their accordion classics since last week’s transmission of WELK.

Thanks to John F. who alerted us to Kimmo Pohjonen. We had no idea that this sort of madness existed, talk about taking the accordion to the next level! We love Kimmo’s get up but don’t think the local allotment committee would allow this sort of gear to be worn on-site especially in this forthcoming heatwave. A great tune by the way.

And he reminded us about this great tune by Les Negresses Vertes a band we here have seen a few years ago but had well forgotten about.

And also Slim of the Urban Voodoo Machine, Slim Cyder Co etc. Here’s the great man in action with Joe Ely from a few years ago.

He also mentioned the Grace Jones tune “I’ve seen that face before” a reworking of Astor Piazzolla‘s “Libertango”.

Steve Barker had also said about the maestro Astor Piazzola amongst lots of others (Clifton Chenier, Rocking Sidney, Boozoo Chavis and Amédé Ardoin and many more) which we’ll look into soon. He also mentioned Flaco JImenez and this tune with Ry Cooder.

And last and not least Mark Paytress who sent us this classic and called it “perhaps my fave squeezebox tune of all time” and he may be right! The Three Suns “Delicado”.

X-Raydio on Channel 292

Tune into X-Raydio tomorrow at 2200 UTC (2300 U.K. time) on Channel 292 on 3955 kHz for a show features a piece on Bone Music by Stephen Coates from The Real Tuesday Weld and also a couple of flexi discs mixes.
The first is at 31.55 mins in from Shane Quentin of The Garden of Earthly Delights and at 46 mins one by One Deck Pete called We Love You Lyntone. Tune into Channel 292 here if you haven’t a shortwave radio for something a bit different!

Tune into X-Raydio tonight on WRMI at 2200 utc (2300 U.K. time) on 9395 kHz for a bit of an ultrasonic treat.
The show features a piece on Bone Music by Stephen Coates from The Real Tuesday Weld and a flexi disc mix by Shane Quentin. Thanks a million to Stephen and Shane for contributing to the show.
So this evening, slip into one of those light hospital gowns, tie up the back (or is it the front?) and tune into something a little bit different on the shortwaves.

Shortwave bargains, bargains, bargains

On Sunday 10th April 2022 at 11pm UK time (10pm UTC) on WRMI on 9395 kHz is the first of a set of transmissions called KBIN if you want to hear something a bit different this weekend. Expect several mixes including some for KMRT and WGTR (Golden Throats Radio).  If you haven’t a shortwave radio use an online software defined radio like this one here and tune into 9395 kHz on the dial. There’s even 50% off for the first 50 listeners so get in early!

Big thanks to Stuart and all at Cities and Memory for their Shortwave Transmissions project that is released today, what is World Radio Day 2022. Cities and Memory teamed up with The Shortwave Radio Archive (Cheers Thomas!) with some rare recordings from the history of shortwave radio from all over the globe to remix. The excellent compilation on their bandcamp site here features some of the great compositions received including a favourite of ours from Grey Frequency called Chimes (Rai Internazionale).

Big shout to our good friend on the other side of the world Paul Greenstein for his contribution to the project called Another Universe. Like he says on the C&M site “Like the narrators, I have a fondness for all things space, astrophysics and the big questions like: is the Universe going to end, what are black holes, and why does Surf Guitar sound dangerous?”

And to our gardening/music/shortwave mate across the pond, Justin Patrick Moore for his track Squatters and unwanted insects of the Malayan Revolution.

20 years of radio fun

More shortwave radio fun coming this weekend on the 75 Metre band courtesy of Channel 292. A transmission to mark the 20th anniversary of All Indie Radio (WAIR) will be broadcast this Sunday 7th February 2021 (and repeated on Sunday 14th February 2021) at 1700 UTC/UK on 3955 kHz. Tune in for some great music.

The programme features our good friends from across the pond DJ Frederick, Justin Patrick Moore and a mix from One Deck Pete called “Thank You John Peel” (more on the late great John Peel here) with tracks by Mogwai, McCarthy, Young Marble Giants, Stereolab and Orange Juice.
