Goodbye to you my trusted friend

The other evening the neighbours looked on thinking we were losing our marbles as we gave the lawn the last cut of the season. Dusk was fast approaching, the sun was still around but there’d been a fair bit of rain during the day so the grass wasn’t the driest it’s ever been.

When at the council we were always told give the grass the latest cut you could before the weather goes far too silly for mowing as this combined with an early spring cut with the mower blades on “High” would save you a lot of work (going over the grass a few times with the mower and constantly raking) in the long run. We here at Weeds swear by that advice!

Also a little bit of grass seed was put down to fill the gaps in the relatively newly sown area just outside the back door that was once a bit load of 1970’s crazy paving. It should grow at this time of year what with the rain and the odd bit of sunlight, unless the birds have it!

And here’s a nice bit of dub that’s been floating our boat of late…

Don’t touch that dial (again)

DJ Frederick‘s Free Radio Skybird is back on the 49 Metre shortwave band again this Sunday October 25th (and repeated the week after) as part of the station’s tenth anniversary. The broadcast goes out at 1200 UTC on 6070 kHz via Channel 292. Expect the usual mixture of stuff with DJ Frederick, The Radiophonic Laboratory and Weed’s own One Deck Pete. Tune in! #shortwavesnotdead #freeradioskybird

To all balearic gardeners out there

A big thanks to our good friend Justin Patrick Moore for passing on another great horticultural-related set, this time from Mazzo called Sound for Gardening.

Reminiscent of all things Café Del Mar, chilled house and summer afternoons, this is one belter of a balearic set. Our favourite tracks are: Cloud Mattress that could be on any of the Jose Padilla cassettes from the late 1990’s, Water Based has a real Moments in Love-ness about it and Clear Sky Cold Wind is as chilled as it gets! Any balearic gardeners out there?

What else that is sound for gardening, are the two containers (above) found outside a house with a sign with “Take Me” on it earlier today. They’ll need a good clean out and a lick of paint and then they’ll be well okay for some spring bulbs. It may only be the autumn but we’re thinking of the spring! Cheers again Justin for the tunes! #keepempeeled

Postscript: We have just learnt minutes after posting this up, that the great Jose Padilla of the Café Del Mar passed away yesterday. RIP Jose Padilla. To say we’re sad is an understatement, 2020 has been such a rubbish year…

Can’t live without my radio

We’re a week and a bit behind on This is a music show and this afternoon listened to show number 084 and there were some great tunes played (including thrift store finds and more Polish records too) alongside a shout for Free Radio Skybird too (Cheers Your Host!) We loved The Lost Generation with The Sly, Sick and the wicked. We’ve never heard of it before and it’s one hell of a tune!

https://soundcloud.com/thisisamusicshow/this-is-a-music-show-084

And then a few records later Your Host plays the Leroy Sibbles version of Ain’t No Love which is another belter! The 12″ we own was obtained for a couple of quid a few years ago from the market around the back of Vauxhall Sainsbury’s which was not a place for the faint hearted! The only flea market that has heavy heavy security. God forbid it can’t be still there now.

Hearing that Leroy Sibbles tune we were brought back to a time when we used to own a cassette of the great Mikey Dread on his radio show in Jamaica from Christmas 1978. What a tape! Here it is in all it’s glory.

So do yourself a favour and tune into This is a music show if you like good tunes and across the board business! #thisisamusicshow #freeradioskybird #dreadatthecontrols

It’s Reggae time!

Big shout to Jesse Yeun for including One Deck Pete‘s “Weeds up to me Knees dub mix” (at 59.29 on the mixcloud below) on his great North of the River Swan show on RTM:FM yesterday. There’s a right old mixture of great downbeat on the show from Karminsky Experience, Tortoise and even one from a duo called One Deck & Popular. Have a listen in…

On the shortwaves on Sunday

It’s DJ Frederick‘s Free Radio Skybird on shortwave this Sunday 11th October (and repeated the week after.) The broadcast goes out at 1100 UTC (12 Noon UK time) on 6070 kHz via Channel 292. There’s a great piece on Numbers stations, Justin Patrick Moore‘s Radiophonic Laboratory and One Deck Pete with “Tunes to cheer you up.” Tune in! #shortwavesnotdead #freeradioskybird

RIP the great Striker Lee

Yesterday we were very saddened to hear of the passing of the great Jamaican producer/arranger and vibes man Bunny Striker Lee. Watch the above at 2.15 minutes and onwards to see the great man in action with some brill dance moves!

And here’s a Bunny Lee produced classic with some versions that’s been played at the Weeds HQ many many times.

And below is another top tune produced by the great man which will be given an airing on the “Weeds up to me knees dub mix” on Jesse Yuen‘s excellent North of the River Swan show from 4pm-6pm on RMT.FM Radio Thamesmead this Sunday coming.

RIP the great Bunny Striker Lee!  You will be sorely missed but your tunes will live on and on!

Cherry ripe, cherry ripe, ripen I cry

We’ve been reading on twitter that people have started to pull up their tomatoes as the plants are on their way out. Perhaps it’s because we’re in the south of the UK our tomatoes are still looking semi-healthy and we may possibly get a few more days out of them.

Well we hope so as we need the fruits to ripen. The ones above in the raised beds are still going. The banana skin on the plant trick didn’t work to ripen them, so let’s just keep our fingers crossed for a couple of days of sun!

The one-off plum tomato plant above is looking great and we reckon we may go for these again next year but they need to ripen.

The self seeded cherry tomato at the bottom of the garden is still growing like crazy too and there’s fruits a go-go!

Please sunshine can you show your face for a few more days or it’s chutney or fried green tomatoes for us here at Weeds HQ!

Dubbing is a must

Next Sunday 11th October 2020 One Deck Pete will be presenting an hour’s “Weeds up to me knees dub mix” on Jesse Yuen‘s excellent North of the River Swan (a show featuring music of the downtempo, dub and bass variety) show from 4pm-6pm on RMT.FM Radio Thamesmead. Pete’s mix will commence around 5pm and to tune in click here. Expect dub of the old and new. Here’s the last show from July below to give you a sample of the top tunes played.

And this excellent tune from Tyler Ov Gaia called A Portal into another world will be thrown into pete’s mix for go measure. Tune in next week!
