Are you experienced?

We got out in the garden today and did just over an hour to warm up those “doing the gardening” muscles. We cleared the bed at the side, gave the ground a light forking which creates the illusion that a lot of work has been done on it when you look from afar. It is nice to see a tidy flowerbed.

And yes we know this is a dandelion (above) but for some reason earlier we didn’t want to dig it up as we thought it may be one of the plants we obtained at the plant stall in Crystal Palace last year. We were told about the plant “the inexperienced gardeners think it is a weed and dig it up” so of course we left it as we didn’t want to be caught out.

Oh, dear we’ve just checked the blog post from last year here. It was this plant (below) they were talking about which looked like a dock. The offending dandelion above will be pulled up first thing tomorrow!

And sick of buying spring onions on a weekly basis, we’ve taken to planting any left-over spring onions in a plant plot by the kitchen rather than throw them away! And why not, waste not, want not and all that.

No rest for the wicked

Here’s a couple of recommendations if you fancy music of a chilled nature. The first a tune that Tom Ravenscroft and Ross Allen have been playing on the radio comes from Charlotte Gainsbourg (produced by Guy-Man from Daft Punk) called Rest. It’s a brilliant song but do disregard the “walking in the air” lyric or you’ll think of that dreadful Snowman film. The second is an excellent set from Laut & Luise (a record label from Cologne and Berlin) thanks to our good mate Will who slung it our way. It’s a mix in an “out there” downbeat style (track listings please!)

We’ve been busy the last fortnight so we haven’t had much time to garden until yesterday when the sun came out in force. The lawn was mown and the seed spuds we bought from Shannon’s many moons ago were finally dug up. Usually as soon as the plant’s flowered we’re in with a fork pulling up marble sized spuds but this time it’s been well worth the wait!Also we tried for the first time an alternative weedkiller (a strong solution of salt and water with a little dot of washing up liquid) for the cracked pavement out the back. We will revisit the area in a week or two to see if it actually works or it’s back out there on our hands and knees.

Never fill a compost trench with the contents of a compost bin that has lots of potato peelings in it. The above picture taken earlier this evening is proof why. If you look closely there is a courgette and a pumpkin plant in there somewhere. You live and learn…
