Are you sure it was sunny here this weekend?

Where has that sun gone to, the one that appeared here the weekend and the same one that contributed to Sunday being 17°C? You will laugh, as over the weekend we even put some plants out in the back garden to harden off. It’s only March and we’re thinking about hardening off plants, we must be crazy. The above pic is a of self-seeded tomato in front of some suncream, after sun and insect repellent, a taste of things to come you reckon?

Do remember that frost prediction site here as that will come in handy if you’ve got that “we’ll get those seeds/plants in early” feeling like us. It’s nearly there but do wait a little before sticking those plants out. Have you seen the forecast for this week?

And it’s summer solstice next week you say?

How changeable has this weather been this weekend? It was tipping it down and windy as hell on Saturday and this afternoon we had clouds in the morning and then a nice bit of sunshine in the afternoon. This mad weather is going to send the garden crazy.

The picture above is on the side bed of some pots on a home-made old coat hanger type thing found in the street a few years ago. We’ve been trying to grow runner beans and sweet peas up it with no success over the years so attached a couple of pots near the top to see what happens. We’ve got cut and come again lettuces in one and poppies in the other in an attempt to stop the slugs from getting at them. What do you reckon, will it work? We very much doubt it.

And we’re trying to disguise the 1980’s crazy paving slab surrrounded pond with some pots and in between the broken paving stones we’ve put in some soil and going to sow california poppies and the like. Anything to disguise those crazy paving we lifted from the top of the garden to make way for some grass. How’s the weather been like around your way this weekend? As bad as ours?

As we mentioned, the weather here has been odd but the combination of the sun and rain is making things grow like mad! The side bed up near the house (above) is getting off to a great pace with the assorted bulbs we got from Lldl breaking through and the sweet pea seedlings started off on the kitchen windowsill not being eaten by slugs.

Even the combined wild bed and vegetable patch (above) is looking a bit structured this year rather than the usual anarchic horticultural madness! We still are pondering what to do with the side of an old shed at the back. Any ideas?

As for the weather, someone once said to us “Wouldn’t it be great if it only rained at night and was sunny during the day. Us gardeners would be so happy”. If only life really was like that.

Who’s in the garden tomorrow?

We took Friday off work hoping to do few jobs in the garden but we didn’t actually get around to it as it was a bit cold and tried again this afternoon but the weather was rubbish again with some light rain. The forecast looks great for tomorrow though so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

And here’s a nice bit of chilled business, a track from GORE in Tokyo, Japan with Bills are piling up. Get some rest tonight as we all may busy in the garden tomorrow.

And talking of spring which we weren’t directly, here’s a favourite of ours from a long time ago. Very apt!

It’s been a nice day today and judging by the weather forecast (above) it will be a bit warmer than last night. So that’s why the protection from the cold has been put on in a nonchalant fashion? Fingers crossed there’ll be no frost tonight then as B&Q bargain buckets balanced on top of potato plants and polythene “sort of” put over raised beds aren’t going to do that much!

And as there were problems with the last transmission, this Sunday will see the Free Radio Skybird show that was promised last week being broadcast, which features One Deck Pete with Tunes to cheer you up at 28 minutes in. A surrealist style summer

Here's gone summerAKA Is this the summer or are we in a perpetual state of hoping for one?

I’ve haven’t long got back from a family break in Camber Sands. The night before I left for the seaside I gave the garden a good old dousing with a hose, thinking it wouldn’t get another drop until I got back. All through that evening and during the night it tipped it down, great eh?

Yesterday I popped into my local supermarket to “get some bits” and said to the chap behind the till, “where’s the sun gone, mate?” as it wasn’t the best of days weatherise.

I thought I’d just get a smile or a jokey reply but he came back with a long bonkers theory that the british government are firing chemicals into the atmosphere during the evening (so no-one will see) to make sure our summers only last a few weeks or even days. The conversation went like that for a few minutes much to the disgust of the long queue forming behind me (he was the only one serving!)

I nodded and picked up my shopping bags. Judging by the weather forecast for the next few days, perhaps he’s right! Solitary squashOne thing in the garden that seems to like the rain, is the mad butternut squash that has filled the square bed at the side of the garden (only one squash on it though) and now trying to climb up the plum tree. Madness!
