An alternative to Dad’s Army

A few nice tunes as an alternative to the quality programming on telly this evening. The first “Surrealiste Skank” from Von D off the Wicked Scam EP on the great Dub Stuy label out the U.S. starts with Bunny “Striker” Lee put through some mad bandpass filter which gives the flavour of what’s to come on the track. It features what sounds like King Tubby’s famous “squawky” sound messed up to the max. A tough, tough tune to say the least!

And the next a nice catchy dubby sausage from The Maghreban off the Pots and Pans 12″ called Elka on Zoot Records. Funky, drummy and dubby! One for the xmas evening Turkey white bread sarnie crew.

And the final one, a DJ version from Trinity called The Book of Roots over a mighty dub of Delroy Wilson’s Have Some Mercy. May you all have a good Christmas night from here at Weeds and do remember, Val Doonican is on the telly at 10.15pm tonight. #wewon’tbewatchingdadsarmyheretonight

Hand in glove

I made a bit of a slip-up today and now have to buy a new pair of gardening gloves.

I was tidying up a comfrey plant that was getting out of control and snipped off some excess leaves as you do. I then decided to add the cuttings into some comfrey liquid that’s been fermenting in a bucket down the bottom of the garden for a couple of months or so.

The leaves went in, followed by my (gardening) gloved hands. The gloves had to be thrown away straight away and my hands thoroughly scrubbed!

I’m still haunted by that smell of rotting comfrey and can’t get the putrid smell out of my nostrils. Horrible stuff! (More on how to make liquid comfrey feed here.)

Dennis Brown – Baby Don’t Do It – Matador (1971)

I heard this classic Dennis Brown tune today on soundcloud, off a recording of a dance with Saxon soundsytem and David Rodigan from the mid 1980’s and what a tune! That led me to recall a lovely recut of it by Wayne Wade from around 1978.

If you love the rhythm as much as I do, listen to the below mix and a half from the excellent Algoriddim which features cut after cut after cut, starting with the great Alton Ellis and featuring a personal favourite of mine, Z90 Skank by Trinity.
