Tune in, turn on. It’s two for tuesday

han and egg radioA couple of great tunes heard on radio shows this week. The first is a lovely loop laden piece of ambient electronica by Gnesis called Pear off the DJ Kicks LP by Actress played on Tom Ravenscroft’s show. Haunting ain’t the word. One to look at the seed catalogues to and decide whether it’ll be artichokes or asparagus peas.

The other is Seconds, Minutes, Hours by David John Sheppard as played by Andrew Weatherall on his Music’s Not For Everyone show on NTS Radio here. Tune! Thanks to our good mates Maz and Marc for re-reminding us about that show.

Two for a sunny Saturday

It’s been a lovely day today with the sun showing its face so why not crank these two up loud while you’re sitting in the back garden with a glass or two of your favourite tipple and take in the scent of the night scented stock this evening.

First off, a great mix from Brooklyn’s Ratatat from Tom Ravenscroft’s show last week. It’s only short, but features tunes from Jay Z, Ratatat, Sebastien Tellier and Aphex Twin. Listen here.

RatatatAlso thanks to Rt Hon David Rodigan for letting us know about the new single with a great video from Alborosie – Rocky Road. Tune!

Tapes – Somebodies Baby – Workshop

You know here at Weeds we love a cover version of a reggae tune and this week on Tom Ravenscroft‘s show we heard another great one! It’s a rendition of Pat Kelly‘s “Somebody’s Baby” by Tapes on the Workshop label as part of the Workshop 21 twelve inch EP.

We love the lo-fi-ness of it, the simple effect of someone sticking their finger on the record deck stopping the tune and it makes us think of Billy Jean by Shinehead as well, which all combines to make one great tune. Nice one Tapes! Listen to the rest of the EP here.

One to play loud while enjoying a glass of cold vino sitting in the back garden (getting bitten by midges) at the end of the day when all the weeding is done.

Here’s the original by Pat Kelly from 1968 complete with a Bunny “Striker” Lee trademark “Ready” at the start of the tune.

Two for a Thursday

The first tune of the night features a combination of an odd acoustic guitar sound, orchestral strings and great vocals courtesy of KEAB (BEAK spelt backwards) with “When we fall” played on Tom Ravenscroft’s show last week. The video even features a mini-seafort type structure which is a bonus for us, as you know we love a seafort here at weeds.

Shivering sandsThe second is a great dub of Kiko Bun’s “Tell me where I’m from” heard on the Rt Hon David Rodigan’s show the other week and what a dub!

Two tunes for blasting out loud from the kitchen window just as it’s getting dark (to ward off the slugs and snails) while watering the garden and sniffing night scented stock fumes. Nice!

On the bonkers for a Thursday night

Go Team!

Here’s a super guest mix from The Go! Team from last week’s excellent Tom Ravenscroft show on BBC Radio 6 music. A mix of all sorts of madness!

One to play very loud in the greenhouse late at night while repotting plants (with just a torch as a light source) especially when there’s a full moon. That’ll get the neighbours talking! The mix is available here.

To all the twirly kings and queens…

toms and peppers feb 2015It’s never t’wirly* here! A few days into the new year I stuck in some seeds (post here) and here’s how they are getting on nearly a month or so later. It’s all done on the cheap, (especially after the expense of christmas!) the propagator cost us £3.50 from shannon’s, the seeds were off ebay and the whole thing is stuck in the back room by the patio doors.

There’s some tomatoes on their way (tray on the left, front) and behind them, the peppers are starting to come through. Alright it’s been a month, but who cares as they won’t be able to go out till ages yet. The other seeds coming through in the pots are some lettuce leaf basil and some strawberries. The other two pots contain an odd one for me, alkanet, don’t ask me why but I’m giving it a go this year and also a chinese lantern (aka bladder cherry. what a good name!) More reports on those in the next few weeks.

spuds on the chit feb 2015And as for the seed potatoes from shannon’s (above), there’s signs of life! Keep on chitting on.

And to end on, here’s a happy sounding slice of tune-age from a few years ago with an apt forward-looking title (considering the weather of late) as heard on Tom Ravenscroft’s show the other week. It’s from Karriem Riggins called Summer Maddnes S.A. (Alone Together.) Roll on the spring!
