And it’s summer solstice next week you say?

How changeable has this weather been this weekend? It was tipping it down and windy as hell on Saturday and this afternoon we had clouds in the morning and then a nice bit of sunshine in the afternoon. This mad weather is going to send the garden crazy.

The picture above is on the side bed of some pots on a home-made old coat hanger type thing found in the street a few years ago. We’ve been trying to grow runner beans and sweet peas up it with no success over the years so attached a couple of pots near the top to see what happens. We’ve got cut and come again lettuces in one and poppies in the other in an attempt to stop the slugs from getting at them. What do you reckon, will it work? We very much doubt it.

And we’re trying to disguise the 1980’s crazy paving slab surrrounded pond with some pots and in between the broken paving stones we’ve put in some soil and going to sow california poppies and the like. Anything to disguise those crazy paving we lifted from the top of the garden to make way for some grass. How’s the weather been like around your way this weekend? As bad as ours?

What the hail?

Here’s some pictures to convey how bad the weather was yesterday around 5pm in London town. It started as a downpour, then heavier rain and then mad hail! To say it was chucking it down was an understatement. A fast flowing stream appearing under the back gate from the drive and then the hail built up at the start of the lawn and it’s still there now.

Watch those seedlings. We may not be having frosty nights but heavy rain and hail can be a pain. One good thing with all of this rain is that the pond is filling up. That makes a change!

I swear the sun DID come out, honest!

Yesterday I spent a nice day outside in the warm sunshine tipping around, planting spuds and helping my daughter sow some seeds in her part of the garden.

As the day came to a close it started to get a bit cold so I stuck a bit of fleece over the freshly sown seeds/seed potatoes “as you never know what the weather will bring” I thought to myself. (Below) Fleece spread over freshly planted spuds just in case that damn frost shows it head (inset) What’s under the upturned plastic pot at the end of the bed.fleece it!Today it started very grey here in London and then in the afternoon it didn’t half tip it down. I later heard on the radio that it’s the beginning of Storm Katie, that’s going to bring some rubbish weather over the Easter holiday. Storm-KatieWhat next? A frost called Frankie or a snowstorm called Sid. What’s with the naming of weather all of a sudden?
