On the shortwaves on Sunday

It’s DJ Frederick‘s Free Radio Skybird on shortwave this Sunday 11th October (and repeated the week after.) The broadcast goes out at 1100 UTC (12 Noon UK time) on 6070 kHz via Channel 292. There’s a great piece on Numbers stations, Justin Patrick Moore‘s Radiophonic Laboratory and One Deck Pete with “Tunes to cheer you up.” Tune in! #shortwavesnotdead #freeradioskybird

Essential lockdown shortwave listening

Here’s last week’s excellent This is a Music Show with some great stuff on it from Tortoise, Stereolab and Aphex Twin and lots more. And it’s all in something called Comb Stereo too! A show well worth tuning into to as per. A big shout to “Your host” and also Daz Man for the nice SDR recording.

And here’s this Sunday’s episode of Free Radio Skybird in a clean audio preview style. It’s a well interesting mix up with Justin Patrick Moore’s tribute to Genesis Breyer P-Orridge in the Radiophonic Laboratory (at 24 mins in), One Deck Pete with “Radio connects us all” (35 mins in) with some great tunes from Sasskia, Mokka and Camille Murray and at 46 mins in we have Shane Quentin from the Garden of Earthly Delights radio show who brings us a lesson in “Radio Re-flex-ology” with the likes of F.C. Judd G2BCX, Ronnie Bond, The Pixies and Barry Blue.

Music will see us through these mad times, it really will.

Bouncing off the ionosphere

Here’s a lovely piece of radio-related graphics which we received the other week thanks to DJ Frederick. It’s a Free Radio Skybird log book designed and produced by the graphic artist NanSea Griggs. It’s an excellent hand-crafted booklet in a folded over card cover which is a collaged, hand stamped, one-off piece which we love here! Have a look at her other work for the cassette label whythetapesplay. Designwise it’s a refreshing breathe of fresh air which makes us shout “Bring back the Prittstick, PVA and the John Bull printing kit to graphic design!”

Just a reminder that Free Radio Skybird will be on the air tomorrow Sunday 29th March at 1100 UTC (1200 UK) on 6070 kHz via Channel 292. The programme will feature Justin Patrick Moore’s Radiophonic Laboratory (at 10 mins in) and One Deck Pete’s “Radio fanatics of the world unite” mix (at 25 mins in) and other interesting stuff. If you haven’t got a shortwave radio tune in here and enjoy something “a little way different” as they say.

Most of them (radio pirates) are quite normal people

DJ Frederick’s Free Radio Skybird returns to the shortwaves on Sunday September 1st 2019 via http://www.channel292.de/ on 6070 kHz at 1900 UTC (8pm UK time).

With a mixture of features and music, the hour transmission will include One Deck Pete’s “Soothing sound of shortwave”, Steve with Mini indie radio and Justin Patrick Moore from Sothismedias with another episode of the Radiophonic Laboratory.

Last month we had listeners in New Zealand, Northern Canada and Italy (QSL and soundclip here) to name but a few places. Come on, what’s better than listening to a radio broadcast with audio that has fading, co-channel interference and sounds like it had a journey via the ionosphere rather than something that’s been streamed in crisp dolby stereo? Who said shortwave radio is dead? #freeradioskybird #shortwavesnotdead #madtone
