Pumpkin’s progress

rat_large_resizeIt all started with seeing the back end of a large rodent in one of our dalek compost bins back in April (post here). The contents of said bin was then emptied into a trench in the bed at the bottom of the garden (below).

A pumpkin, butternut squash and a courgette plant were purchased from Shannon’s and stuck on the top of the trench as they love that sort of richness.

Everything has gone green

Then there was that big gardening faux-pas, all the potato peelings in the compost trench started to sprout and threatened said plants (post here). It was dealt with by some continuous hoeing, a few times a week!

Then we had some action on the pumpkin, it started small, then a bit bit bigger but still green.

Then the other week it started to change colour. As long as those pesky rodents don’t have it we might be onto having a giant pumpkin!

Three corkers this week, one from the back garden and two from Ross Allen and Andrew Hale’s brilliant show on Misoul available here.

The above is the squash/blue pumpkin harvested this evening. This is the first time I’ve ever had success with squashes, I got this specimen (which was the only one) from a plant that I constantly watered and fed weekly during the summer. It went all sprawling over the shop, but it was worth it for this mad looking thing with weird eyelashes! Big up the squash!

Johnny Clarke – Babylon – Cha Cha
And here’s two corkers from Ross and Andrew’s excellent show on Misoul, it’s been a while since listening to it and the first time back I wasn’t disappointed. The first is the excellent Johnny Clarke with Babylon, a Jah Shaka favourite which has a great dub too.

Gloria Ann Taylor – Love is a hurting thing
Next is a tune I’ve never heard before and one that puts me in mind of Siouxsie and the Banshees “Happy House” and Eddie Kendricks’ “Girl you need a change of Mind” with Liberace at the controls! Don’t listen too hard to the mix as the kick drum is well up front. Two tunes to take your mind of the bad weather of late!

Resonators – Dub Getter – Wah Wah 45s

I’ve been busy of late and have neglected me garden a little but I have a good few days next week to tinker around before I go away for me hols so I’ll be able to tackle those weeds! It’s looking good though, and that’s without a bit of TLC over the last week!

The storm over the weekend did do a little bit of damage to some of the plants especially a few tomatoes and the odd sunflower. Here’s the view before the storm, how mad is that pumpkin plant?Pumpkin taking overpumpkin gone madAnd I’ve never really grown peppers before, not bad for a first attempt and in an old tomato tin too!Pepper me Loving the tomatoes at the moment even though the storm at the weekend has nobbled a few plants. Looking good though!cherry toms galoreBig up that old gardening lark!

All flowered up on a Friday (the lull before the storm)

I got the camera out well early in the garden this morning when it was flowers-a-go-go before the all day mental heat and pressure built up, leading to this evening’s mad storms (and probably arguments down the pub too!)

Who’s that Lilly?:oh lilly pondBefore it tipped it down, Beats In Space: Show 738 was on loud pon the stereo. Have a listen here. Pt 1 has the mad Brazilian jazz stylings of Moreno Veloso (with a couple of live tracks) and Pt 2 has a cracking mix from Mark Barrott/International Feel in an downtempo Balearic stylee.

Both great stuff for a summer’s evening before it tips it down and one to transport yourself from the back garden to a balearic holiday destination (without the crap stag nights and expense!)

A big shout to Tim Sweeney from all at Weeds Up to Me Knees and to “happy” gardeners everywhere!
