Much more music…

News just in! There’s a new EP release from Jasmine & Madtone and it’s up on Bandcamp here featuring the two tracks that were on The Rhythm Doctor’s excellent mix on Gilles Peterson’s Breakfast show on Worldwide FM. Expect more new music from Jasmine & Madtone soon!

Popcorn Double Feature later showing

Wow we didn’t even know it was a cover version! We prefer The Fall‘s interpretation but this ain’t bad though. While we’re there, we’re sticking this one below from The Fall as we love the Lee Perry original but this is great too.

We must remember this is a gardening blog (or is it?)

Another great tune found whilst researching a forthcoming shortwave radio mix, a very summery sounding tune from a little while back, complete with a backwards tracking part in it. Cornershop with England is a Garden. Wonderful!

And talking of backwards tracking, check the B side of this one which we’ve featured a few times here so why not again. Burt Walters on the vocals with Honey Love, the great upsetter on the mix.  Love the sound of the vocal track tape being rewound to start in the right place. Crazy!

Tunes for a Thursday

Through all of the researching of the Abedare Rockers cassette a few great gems have come to the surface like this excellent track from Debra Keese and Black Five with Travelling produced by Scratch The Upsetter. And you want the toast, here it is! Top tunes galore!

Calling the world, calling the world

Here’s last night’s broadcast of Skybird Radio International which was beamed to Europe thanks to Shortwave Gold on 6160/3975 kHz at 9pm UK time.

There’s an hour of a mix up of music from around this globe of ours including a mix at 23.36 from One Deck Pete. Here’s the tracks which was played on the said mix:
Madtone – Diamonds in the sky (excerpt)
Unknown – Berceuse (off John Peel’s Archive Things LP)
Minyo Crusaders – Cumbia del Monte Fuji
Cyril Diaz & his orchestra – Taboo
Brno Radio Folk Orchestra – Cymbalom Dance (off John Peel’s Archive Things LP)
Sam Carty – Bird in hand

Enjoy!

Funny what you find

This week while searching for some tracks for a forthcoming shortwave radio transmission we found the bandcamp site of Twink The Toy Piano Band from Boston, Massachusetts. As it says on the page about the creator Mike Langlie “He mixes toys and electronics for a quirky and catchy sound ranging from imaginary cartoon soundtracks to spooky lullabies to playroom mosh pits.” Brilliant, just brilliant. We implore you to explore Twink The Toy Piano Band here.

We always used any excuse for putting this track up but Twink’s tune made us think of this brilliant track from the Young Marble Giant’s Testcard EP. It’s nothing like it but puts us in mind of…

And talking of recommendations, thanks to Justin Patrick Moore for letting us know of this collaboration of the late Lee Perry and the heaviness of New Age Doom. This is nuts! More to explore.

Who said shortwave is dead?

Big shout to everyone at Cities and Memory for organising the Shortwave transmissions project. Earlier this year they teamed up with The Shortwave Radio Archive and made available some shortwave recordings to remix and for people to tinker with.

One sample was from Radio Afghanistan recorded in 1976 which was the basis for the newest tune from Jazz’min Tutum & Madtone which is now up online on the Cities and Memories Audioboom site here alongside some other very interesting interpretations. Cheers again Cities and Memories!

The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know

At the time of the passing of the great Lee Perry (“Our musical Papa” as the song goes) we posted up his very ahead of its time (1968) version of Burt Walter‘s Honey Love where he places Burt’s vocals played in reverse over the backing track. So bonkers it actually works!

We’ve just found the original version by sheer chance which was by The Drifters. Another case of “Well we never knew that”…

Rock the musical (and gardening) atmosphere

As heard on today’s Rhythm Doctor’s Waiting Room on IDA Radio (Tallinn) (from 8am-11am UK time every Monday) here’s a well chilled and dubby classic from a few years ago and very much a favourite here!

Also a related tune from the great Lee Perry (RIP) also heard on the same show a few weeks previously. Tunes!

And while we’re there, let’s not forget this one…
