Like a shoplifter out of nowhere…

Two Paradise Garage classics were heard in a couple of retail establishments earlier today. The first was “My Love is free” by Double Exposure heard in a coffee/expensive sausage roll shop in Herne Hill at 9.30 am.

Later on while walking through Lewisham Shopping Centre (home of probably the cleanest public loos in London) at about 12.30 pm The Fatback Band‘s “Going to see my baby” was coming through the speakers. What next, a bit of Death Metal in the meat aisle in Tesco sometime this week?

What’s the best tune you have heard being played in a shop? Answers please via the comments and we’ll blog up a chart.

By the way here’s a classic Paradise Garage cassette from supposedly1982 but possibly recorded a few years later.

Gil Scott Heron – The Bottle
The Clash – The Magnificient Dance
Cymande – Bra
Loose joints – Is it all over my face
Double Exposure – My love is free
Exodus – Together Forever
First Choice – Double Cross
First Choice – Dr Love
Lenny Williams – Running (mixed with Man Fridays Love Honey, love heartache acapella.)
Fatback Band – Going home to see my baby
Loleatta holloway & Salsoul orchestra – runaway
Shades of love – Body to body
Positive force – We got the funk
Roy Ayers – Running away
Salsoul orchestra – Ooh, I love it (love break)
Salsoul orchestra – You’re just the right size
Carl Bean – Born this way

Help me make it through the day

To keep us sane at work today we listened to a couple of episodes of this brilliant series (originally from 2011) which feature some great tunes and some great DJ anecdotes. In episode 1 the inventor of the 12″ single and the extended mix Tom Moulton mentions David Rodriguez one night going on the mike while DJing at the Limelight and telling the crowd he was in a bad mood and that they all should leave the club, brilliant! All episodes are here and are well worth listening to! And to end here’s two classic mixes from the great Tom Moulton!

And talking of beans…

A legume related classic originally on Tamla Motown, a double tune and a half (a cover of another Motown artist Valentino) first heard on a Larry Levan Paradise Garage cassette obtained in the early 90’s from our good mate Mark Platts…

Carl Bean – I Was Born This Way (Better Days Mix)

Larry Levan’s Paradise Cabbage

Cabbage patch_Doll

Pulled up this beauty Sunday afternoon after walking past it a few times this week trying to think of what to have with it! Sausage and Mash was the choice in the end. This is the first time I’ve really had a decent Cabbage as the plants usually get eaten earlier on or bolt. These were started as seed in the spring and I stuck them in and forgot about them and as you can see they look half decent. Success!

Everything is looking good in the garden (okay things are a few weeks late), apart from the runner beans are terrible and god knows what’s happening to my blackberry bush, it was looking great with lots of berries on it now it’s turning yellow, it’s not lack of water as I’ve been giving it a nightly hose. Help! Any ideas?

Also a big up to Paul W for sending us this article. You can sell some courgettes to your neighbours but don’t let the taxman find out our he’ll nick your strawberries as payment!
