Last night we found a wonderful track on Bill Laswell’s Trojan Dub Massive Volume One compilation on Bandcamp. It’s a version of Delroy Wilson’s Have Some Mercy (first heard on the John Peel show many years ago) and George Faith’s To be a Lover called Lovers Skank (Spanglers Clap) by The Upsetters. Crazy minimal dub with all sounds of strange things over the top.
This track also appears on the vintage King Tubby’s Hometown Hi-Fi recording from Jamaica in 1975 (Thanks to Who Cork The Dance for cleaning the tape up) at 11 minutes in. As the great U-Roy says while the track is playing “It’s kind of scratchy, very very scratchy but the brother asked to play…” Tune!
Here’s an excellent interview with the great U-Roy where he talks about King Tubby’s electronics wizardry at 11 minutes in.
We’ve just come across this track from 2013 from Music Komite out of spain and it’s called King Tubby and it’s one great tune. It’s jazzy, chilled and there’s even some gongs or bells going on. And a spring reverb too!

Tune into those magic shortwaves tonight Sunday 10th April 2022 at 11pm UK time (10pm UTC) for KDUB vs Radio Clarion via the power of WRMI (the same radio station that broadcasts the mighty This is a music show) on 9395 kHz if you want to hear some horns and dub this weekend. If you haven’t a shortwave radio use an online software defined radio like this one here and tune into 9395 kHz on the dial.
At about 18 mins into the broadcast will be One Deck Pete‘s “Horns and dub on shortwave” mix featuring tracks from Burning Spear, Skin Flesh & Bone/Revolutionaries, King Tubby and more. Tune in and dub out!

And it’s just gone online, the studio quality recording of today’s broadcast of KDUB on shortwave. One Deck Pete‘s “In Dub for KDUB” is 3 minutes in alongside a lot more great dubwise material from the others at KDUB HQ. Tune in without the fading!

We at Weeds were very saddened to hear the news of the passing of the DJ Daddy, U Roy earlier today. Years and years ago we picked up a scratched copy of Jump For Joy/This is Another Festival on the Grounation label for 10p at John’s Second-hand shop in Hillfields, Coventry in 1978 and it went on from there…
Here’s a couple of our favourite clips of the great man that have cheered us up over the years. Some nice threads he’s wearing there too!
And here’s a piece of musical history, a recording of U Roy on King Tubby’s Hi-Fi in Kingston, Jamaica from 1975. Be warned the quaility makes some of our “3 out of 10” punk cassettes in the loft sound like sensurround sound! RIP the great U Roy!
As heard on last week’s excellent On The Wire show on BBC Radio Lancashire. Lloyd Ruddock with the excellent Roy Cousins produced “Genuine Way” with the lovely flip, Ungena, a dub by his brother the late great King Tubby. Cheers Stevie B for letting us know about this one and for Fenny for telling us about finding a genuine stone-age axe head! Here it is in all it’s glory on the On The Wire website! It’ll be passed onto a museum for safe keeping but what a find!

Here’s a quick visual update on the Thompson & Morgan seed trials. The tomatoes are looking more like beefsteak ones every day and look at the size of them!

The sunflowers are also doing well too! We love the surprises we’ve had with the trials and it shouldn’t be too long now before we’re informed about the actuals names/varieties of the plants. We’re still waiting on the spaghetti squash to ripen and we’ve a couple of lettuces on the way too. We love the trails we do!

Plant variety name of the week is the Daylily called “Punk Rocker”. Wonderful stuff! Seen a Pelargonium King Tubby or a Hydrangea Clock DVA on your travels? We here at Weeds are always on the look out for music related plant name varieties so next time you’re at the garden centre “Keep them peeled” as Shaw Taylor used to say.

The Sun is showing it’s face in London town today and to celebrate here’s a great five and a half hour recording of the great Jah Shaka at The Dub Club, Kingston. Earlier on in the mix “Problems” by Horace Andy is spun, reminding us of a great Augustus Pablo version of the rhythm. More on the dub club, Kingston here.
Spring is finally here (but there’s still a massive risk of frost in the next few weeks so take it easy at that garden centre!)
