A big shout to our good friend across the pond Justin Patrick Moore for sending us pictures of his indoor plants that are now being transferred back into the house after a summer outside in the garden. That’s a great load of plants there.
As we’ve mentioned before, we’re not the best at keeping houseplants here but are getting better with the watering/non-watering days. Great pictures Justin!
Also here’s a great video with Justin giving an interesting talk about his excellent book The RadioPhonics Laboratory, more about that here. If you love radio and electronic music do give it a watch and get the book as it’s a great read.
Here’s the audio of yesterday’s Shortwave Gold broadcast of Skybird Radio International on 3975/6160 kHz.
The show is all about grooves from around this world of ours but this time it’s about the instrumental. There’s some wonderful eclectic music in a true worldwide style as usual from all of the Imaginary Stations DJ’s including DJ Frederick and Justin Patrick Moore.
At 29 seconds in is a mix from One Deck Pete, here’s the tracklistings: Madtone – Diamonds in the sky (excerpt)
Hermanos Gutiérrez – Cumbia Lunar
Mouth – Ooh, Ahh, Yeah
BackYard Riddims/Tommy Khosla (Sitar) – SchaantiDub
Bob Keene Orchestra – Comin’ on Again
The Supersonics – Second Fiddle
Have a listen to the show as it’s brilliant and you’re welcome to add the singing bits yourself!
A big shout goes out to our good friend Justin Patrick Moore in Cincinnati for sending us a couple of pictures of garden related stuff found on his journeys last weekend. As Justin writes “On Saturday afternoon, I was walking the dog and what did I spy with my little eye, but a garbage can full of little wooden fence slats. We have long wanted to put some fencing around the compost all the way in the back to keep the dog out of it (she likes to sniff through the old food, no wonder she is so gassy). Here was my golden opportunity!”
“Then on Sunday my wife and I were picking up our daughter and her dogs to take them for a walk in the woods. Out in the neighbors trash on the curb when we pulled up was a box of pots that my wife Audrey immediately scored and threw into the back of the car.”
“Audrey was fond of this band Blanche, and their song “Garbage Picker” and I agree that it’s a real good one.”
“You never know what you’re gonna find, so keep’em peeled!” Cheers Justin!
A big shout to our good friend actoss the pondJustin Patrick Moore (of the excellent The Radio Phonics Laboratory Bookhere) for passing on this great piece of electronica. It’s from GLOK / Timothy Clerkin with a lovely track called Empyrean. Starts pretty bonkers and gets even better, it’s a catchy bit of electronic malarkey. No idea what it reminds us of but it is great. Cheers Justin!

Next Sunday Imaginary Stations will be bringing a cinematic treat to those shortwaves. On Sunday 1st September 2024 at 0900/1300 hrs UTC on 6160 kHz and then at 2000 UTC on 6160 kHz and 3975 kHz they’ll be presenting Skybird Drive-in Radio via Shortwave Gold. They’ve got the matinee and evening spots booked for you so there’s no need to arrive early in the motor. Make yourself a tasty snack (hot dogs, tacos, ice cream, a burger or perhaps some popcorn?) and turn on the shortwave radio, it’s as easy as that. Then imagine you’re in a cadillac or whatever car you fancy, tilt your seat back and enjoy all sorts of cinema related tunes as you would in an outdoor experience.
There’s all sort of cinema related tunes and at 38.39 there’s a mix by One Deck Pete called Crash course for the ravers featuring tunes by Trío Noctámbulo, Count Lasher, Charlie Binger & his calypsonians, 3kuad and The Fall. Enjoy the evening’s programme but before you leave please could give the management back the in-car speakers as they are expensive.
The programme will be repeatedWednesday 4th September 2024 at 0200 UTC on 9395 kHz viaWRMI.
The other day we walked up by the Brockley Best Hand Car Wash and saw an excellent example of guerrilla gardening in action that even the great Gansta Gardener Ron Finley would be proud of.
We’ve walked past there a fair few times before but never noticed any gardening going on. Whether it’s the actual car cleaners themselves or someone utilising the triangular space of land on the corner of the forecourt there’s a load of tomato plants that are looking well loved and healthy. Someone’s giving them a good watering and feed by the look of it and it was a nice suprise to the eyes!
Across the road from there is something else we never noticed before even though we’ve been told about it a couple of times (cheers Steve). Lorenzo’s Records has been in the locality for 3 years and it’s a great record shop. Sadly we didn’t stay long but we’ll be visiting again. Narmy from there told us about the excellent LP from Mort Garson (below) when we mentioned Weeds up to me knees and how it was about gardening as well as music. We’d forgotten that Justin Patrick Moore of the excellent Radio Phonics Laboratorybook mentioned this to us a while back here after we recognised the LP sleeve. What with it being so Weeds related we thought we’d post it again. Great recommendation Narmy!
We bought a handful of singles from the shop including this one that we’ve never heard before from Ezz Reco And The Launchers With Boysie Grant called King Of Kings. There’s some crazy lion noises at the start and towards the end which adds to the tune. On first listen we thought it was some of strange warp on the vinyl.
You think you know the area you live in and it’s great to know that there are still hidden (music and gardening) treasures that can take you by suprise.
Thanks again to Justin Patrick Moore, this time for letting us know about this great track. Sounding like a send up of the Lincolnshire Poacher number station the wonderfully named Shropshire Number Stations brings you The Minsterley Tumbler and it’s good fun. We do hope that this doesn’t start a trend of happy sounding tunes sampling/parodying number stations as it’s all doom and gloom and the end of the world on shortwave, ain’t it?
Here’s another track that isn’t getting all serious on us when it comes to sampling off shortwave. Ax Martz brings us the upbeat Mensaje en código (Coded message).
If you do some bass heavy tripped out ravey number stations vibes, this is a good one. RAVEDEATH1993 with Number Station Dub.
00000. End of message end of transmission. Enjoy your weekend (said in a monotone robotic voice of course).
It’s going absolutely crazy in the vegetable patch at Justin Patrick Moore‘s back yard in Cincinnati. Our good friend from across the pond and author of the fine book The Radio PhonicsLaboratory (out now from the Peckham based Velocity Presshere) has sent us some pictures of his vegetable plot. Look at the monster zuchinni plants (above) and the present harvest (below).
And as for the green beans and the corn (and the current harvest in the fridge) look at the below. It’s funny as our zuchinni (AKA courgette or baby marrow over here) and green beans didn’t get past germination stage or if they did, the “no holds barred” Forest Hill slugs had them.
Usually with zuchinni/courgettes we have a glut and there’s only so much you can do with them. There are ways around that glut though, we’ve tried this chocolate courgette cake here and here’s a great idea from Justin’s wife Audrey.
An open sandwich called Yvonne.
Put sauteed mushrooms, tomatoes, zucchini, and spinach, black olives if you like them, seasoned with garlic, pepper, basil and melted swiss cheese on top that you ladle over toasted bread. Add a splash of soy sauce to your taste. Sounds great for those zuchinni gluts and your own gut too.
And (above) look at this for a self-seeding/volunteer zuchinni in his garden too! What went on with our seedlings I wonder and usually our normal plants don’t even get as big as this.
And as for a tune, Justin picked this one from Tim Curry funnily enough called The zucchini song. Cheers again for the pics and recipe idea Justin and here’s more on his great book here:
Thanks to our good friend across the (big garden) pond Justin Patrick Moore for finding this brilliant game in a thrift store in Cincinnati this morning and mailing the picture over pronto. It’s very much in keeping with our last post about Antiques Roadshow and doesn’t the bloke putting in a bid put you in mind of Private Walker from Dad’s Army (below)?
We do love a thift store/second hand/charity shop here and we’re always up for seeing any charity shop finds from the best to the worst. Seen any overpriced Max Bygraves records at your local charity shop or some old net curtains that are more expensive than new ones? If so, take a snap and send us a picture. We will not name the shop and keep the location anonymous so they’ll be no comebacks. And going back to auctions, here’s a bit of fast chat business…
