Don’t cast a clout until March is out…

Big thanks to Gerry Hectic for letting us know that he’s started sowing some seeds too. He found his old B&Q incubator (above, which looks great!) and used up some of last years’ seeds in it and also sowed some broad beans in the pots and that are all down in the shed. Great stuff, with this present weather he should see some results in the next couple of weeks. Yes we know it’s a little early but with this strange weather we’re having (we even saw snowdrops flowering in Horniman Gardens yesterday!) we may as well take advantage of it.
And other great news in is that Gerry has spotted some frogspawn in his pond. Excellent stuff! Cheers for also sending is this great track from Fug with From Little Seeds We Grow (4hero Folk Soul Remix). Do keep in touch with how things get on Gerry!

It was very sad to hear about Benjamin Zephaniah who passed away this morning. Thanks to Gerry Hectic for letting us know about this great tune. RIP Benjamin Zephaniah.

Dubs of the day

Thanks to our good mate Gerry Hectic who recommended this piece of dubwise this morning from Jay Glass Dubs from Anthens, Greece. It’s very gardening related too what with the name of Narcissus. Very nice.

And one from us on this sunny but cold day, a nice Jazz type dub vibe from New Zion Trio out of New York with a 9 minute version of Ras Michael and the Sons Of Negus’ None A Jah Jah Children Dub. Wow, what a tune.

 

Metal made for the garden

Cheers to Gerry Hectic for letting us know of a purchase made at that well known retail store Lldl recently. It’s a Bougainvillea Hybride and don’t look too bad!

It’s got a good heavy metal name too (below). Is there a Black Sabbath Rose by any chance or a GWAR geranium sitting in a garden centre as we write? More heavy rock plant names via the comments please.

Gardening connects us all again

We know the fish are feeding hence near the surface but the barley straw may be working in the pond. It’s been two weeks and we can see a little bit of difference as you could only see the tips of the fishes mouths before. We will keep you posted!

Big thanks to our good friend Wlad (US7IGN) in Kyiv, Ukraine for the excellent picture of one big palm tree in the glasshouse of one of the two botanical gardens there. Wlad was saying his good friend Sergiy UT3UFD (whose banana plant we’ve featured here and here) loves going there and Wlad said the thing that he personally likes when he’s also there are the tall palm trees as they are “Perfect antenna masts” brilliant Wlad! Great to hear from Gerry Hectic who sent a recent pic of his pond. He was saying the water levels have gotten a little low and weeds have seemed to taken over but “I thought I’d just heard a frog croak!” Great stuff on that Gerry!

We also heard from Rich R again from the Lake District who showed us his great garden with breathtaking views at the end of March here. The picture above which locals call fox and cubs are all over his garden. He was saying the flower which is in the family Asteraceae is native to alpine regions of central and southern Europe. There is a theory that they may have been brought over by the romans alongside other plants including some fig trees in the area that are very old now. His garden is next to a roman road and about 15 miles from the west end of Hadrians Wall. Who knows but it’s interesting stuff!

Well it’s the longest day today so happy solstice to one and all and thanks to our mates all over for sending us some great pictures. We are always interested in plant and gardening related pics so do send them over!

Tune of a Thursday lunchtime

Cheers to our good mate Gerry Hectic for sending this deeply dubby recommendation (above). It’s from Aspartate and it’s called Apart (Version). All we know about it is produced by someone called Mark Bailey and it’s on the D.Construction label out of Germany and their Bandcamp is here.

And talking of chilled out dub, here’s another lovely example. It’s by Dub Addiction and it’s called Ecological Dub (Calm Down Remix). It will be featured on a lounging mix on the shortwaves very very soon.

Music for Eno’s waterlogged garden

A big thanks to our good friend Gerry Hectic who just forwarded on a couple of musical recommendations this wet Saturday morning. The first is on a KBUS tip from Psychic Temple with Music For Bus Stops. It’s a great jazzed out groove with a bassline that reminded us in parts of Human League’s Being Boiled. One for supping a large of mug of tea to whilst looking out of the window.

The next is a crazy dubbed out track called Strange Times At Roswell High Dub by the X Ray Cat Trio from “Leeds, England” (as Cowboy Joe would say, 6 minutes in here). Play this whilst putting on your gardening footwear when having to pop down the garden in the pouring rain when that kitchen waste container is well overflowing and a compost heap visit is a must. By the way supposedly better weather tomorrow.

Dub, Gardening and Art makes sense

Big shout to our good gardening friend Gerry Hectic for sending us a pic of what he harvested from his garden this week. Looking great! We are nearing the end of the main growing season but there’s still some time left. Send us your growing pics as we love them here and find them inspiring and send us a tune too!

Gerry sends us a great dub poetry recommendation from Lil Obeah Meets Isuru called Chaos Is Dub, a lovely bit of reggae from the excellent Romanian label Sound of Art to Come. Cheers for the pic and musical tip Gerry!

Thanks to our good friend John F who sent us this great version of The Abyssinians – Satta Massagana by Los Miticos Del Ritmo called Satta Massa Cumbia from a few years ago. We’ve never heard this before. Great stuff John!

And thanks also to our mate Gerry Hectic for this horticultural related number. It’s from Fug and it’s called From Little Seeds We Grow (4Hero Folk Soul Remix) and it’s a lovely number with a brilliant Instrumental too.

Pick up the garden fork and now breathe…

The sun’s out again and it’s 27°C and very dry in the garden this afternoon.

Last week we heard Christine Walkden on Gardener’s Question Time who said she likes to give her garden a good water with just a watering can and it can take her up to 2 hours at a time.

Since ditching the hose after watching a great special about conserving water on Gardener’s World a while ago it now takes us quite a while too just using a watering can without a rose on the top. We enjoy the slow ritual, the endless walks back and forth to the tap, making sure the soil gets a good soaking. We probably wouldn’t like it that way if we were going to catch a train but it’s a nice thing to do on an early morning on a day off work or in the later evening after a day of toil.

Is there such a thing as “meditative gardening”? There was a lot of staring into space with one foot on a garden fork when we worked at the council so it may have been around for years.

Talking of meditative gardening, there’s a great horticultural themed set from Monster Rally (we have a feeling that someone may have mentioned this to us before, our mates Gerry Hectic, DJ Frederick or Justin Patrick Moore perhaps?) called Botanica Dream. It’s full of some lovely downtempo business and at the moment the track above is our favourite but they’re all excellent.
