Scratched out and scratchy, seven inch singles

Here’s a mix called “Have you seen me record middle?” that was inspired by a Facebook post the other day about the M Robinson “Follow you” single that had a lack of information on the label.

It led us to have a butchers through our 7″ singles yesterday and on this mix have included some (mainly Jamaican) singles with scratched-out artist/tune names and hand written tune details. Here’s the tracks:

And here’s another Christmas themed number, on the B side of M(artell) Robinson‘s “Follow you”, a version of Jingle Bells. It’s on a Port-of-Jam white label and it may be the sound of Rico Rodriguez. Whoever it is, it’s a whopper of a tune!

And we heard this on the radio today. We didn’t even know that this tune existed in reggae!

Rose thorns as gramophone needles. Isn’t it?

King Stitt/Tommy Mc Cook – Sauvitt
As sampled by One Deck & Popular on “Son of Stitt” (here) and a version of Mongo Santamaria‘s Suavito (here).

Alick Nkhata – Kalindawalo Ni Mfumu
This track is something else! A sort of Rock n Roll stomper, with some lovely harmonies and some horns courtesy of a Coventry Salvation Army brass band sound-alike and someone tinkling those ivories very skillfuly towards the end. Marty Robinson – Follow you
From a very battered Coxsone Dodd white 7″ blank and later released on his Port-O-Jam label. M (Martell/Marty) Robinson may have lived in the Coventry/Birmingham area for a bit too. More about the artist here.

COOL down the pace

Last weekend’s transmission of Imaginary Stations (the show that features music you probably won’t hear elsewhere on shortwave) is now up on Mixcloud. This episode is the station COOL “Cool tunes for Summer moods” featuring some music that evokes sunshine even though London last weekend wasn’t experiencing much of that.
