Punk Rock That’s Yer Lot!

We’re not usually one’s for punk rock nostalgia here (there is some punk rock nostalgia here by the way) but we picked up this fanzine on ebay the other day for just over a tenner. It was something we can remember from the time it was featured in an NME feature on fanzines around 1977/78 and the cover image has always stayed in our memory.

We love a good fanzine here as you know and this is an excellent example of one (this one features The Clash, Sex Pistols live at Notre Dame Hall plus an interview with Howard from The Adverts and lots more) especially with an article entitled Music Papers… Will they ever take over from fanzines?

But we were very shocked at the hostility aimed at its readers from its editors (below) as “It’s just not cricket” as they say. We’d also love to know the relevance of the “Any of you xxxxers want to become film stars and/or lend equipment. Ring Rough Trade and leave a message”. Wonder what’s that about? And shock horror the Roxy is playing funk and heavy rock, gawd help us…

And on that note we will drink some more cans of strong lager, (try to) do the punk kicking dance and then go to bed feeling sick at 9pm. Punk Rock that’s yer lot! #gardeningsnotdead #shortwaveradiosnotdead

On a pritt stick tip

An afternoon of zinesThanks to Fliss C for letting us know about the next fanzine related event at Putney Library, 5-7 Disraeli Road, Putney SW15 2DR on Saturday 7th May 2016 from 2-5pm.

They’ll welcome everyone who’s interested in fanzines especially people who are new to the subject too as they’re having a library for people to sample zines. Fliss herself is having an exhibition there celebrating her 20 years of my zine work. Brilliant stuff! More info here. She’s picked a very apt tune to accompany this piece.

And if you love all those old Punk fanzines take a look at the “Bored Teenagers” fanzine page (which features our old fanzine Ded Yampy alongside loads of others of that time.)

Bored teenagers

Vive la Prittstick, an old typewriter and a procured photocopier!

Pre-solstice shouty vibes

Big shout to Tim and Stand up and spit for posting up the second issue of my old fanzine Ded Yampy from many moons ago here. Respect is due Tim!

If you love “Ranting poetry, sweary poetry, boozy poetry” Stand up and Spit is for you!

Cheers to my good mate Pete R too for originally spotting it!

More old time fanzine business here. Cheers Joly!

Where were you in 2012?

Last week I went to “Someday All the Adults Will Die!” (Punk Graphics 1971-1984), an exhibition and fanzine discussion at The Hayward Gallery here in London. I’ve always been interested in fanzines since doing one years ago, so thought I’d give it a go. Ta to Marc for the tip off.

The discussion featured amongst others, Tony D from Ripped and Torn/Kill Your Pet Puppy fanzine and Gee Vaucher, creator of the bonkers graphics for the punk band Crass. Funnily enough I stayed off the beer on the night as I usually get a bit contrary at these events and give it all “Punk wasn’t about nostalgia” etc etc (yawn!).

One of the highlights of the discussion was me and my mate (nice one Lee!) getting told off by the girl in front of us for whispering a couple of times through the talk. So much for Punk being about freedom, obviously not! Later on going around the exhibition I got a bit worked up as it featured a copy of Ripped and Torn 17 (All images on this post from that issue). “I’m in that, I’m in that” I excitedly said to my mate. Good job I didn’t have a drink beforehand as I wouldn’t been happy until I had got the staff to unscrew the Perspex panel there and then and take the fanzine down to show to my friend. Good job I didn’t, as looking at that Ripped and Torn again this morning I found the mention, very very small at the back of it in biro (below).

Hardly stuff to get worked up about.

But no whispering at punk discussions though!

Gardening’s not dead!

Tales from the zerox machine

Last week I got a copy of the fanzine “Gardeners Delight” after seeing the review for it on the site produced by DJ Frederick from the US fanzine Paper Radio called One Minute Zine Reviews http://zinereviews.blogspot.com/. I originally thought they from the States too but turns out they are from S.W. London!

Issue 1, produced last year is an excellent introduction to the world of gardening, has great tips and information for those who are interested in the hobby and want to get started. Issue 2 will feature how to set up a community garden amongst other things which is well up our street. Great stuff and all for the cheap price of £2 including p+p! More information from flissc@gmail.com

They are associated with a community garden which has a nice site at http://www.wimbledonfoodgroup.co.uk/fireplace-garden-blog.html
Inspiring stuff!
It was easy, it was cheap. Go and do it!
