Free seeds, ferrero rocher and protoje

Back bedIt was an afternoon of good weather today so I tipped around in the garden and finished off clearing the back bed and it was nice to see it clear of weeds for once.

CornflowerI’m giving the bed a bit of a rest of veg this year so unusually it’s going be full of flowers if all goes to plan. This afternoon I sowed a load of cornflowers called ‘blue boy’ in the first quarter of the bed (600 seeds off ebay for £1.50 including p+p, cheap or what?)

Talking of seeds and good value, earlier this morning I picked up a copy of “Grow your own” magazine for £4.99 for the free packets of veg seeds (little gem lettuce, basil, courgette, kale, carrot and celeriac) from the WH Smiths in Lewisham. They were also selling cut-price Terry’s Chocolate Oranges and Ferrero Rocher on a special make-shift stall outside the store because of Mother’s day tomorrow. Aaahhhhh!

Grow your own

And to end on, a lovely tune in a hip-hop/reggae style from the great Protoje called Criminal. A tune to play whacked up loud while searching magazine emporiums for gardening mags with free vegetable seeds as it’s “that time of year”. Big up Rodigan for playing this the other week. More of the instrumental version please.

And thanks to youtube, a nice live version of the tune.

Outside the winds blows a hooley, inside it’s mellow

Inner Circle ft. Chronixx & Jacob Miller – Tenement Yard (News Carryin’ Dread)

Heard this on David Rodigan’s radio show this week, a lovely reworking of Jacob Miller’s “Tenement Yard” from Inner Circle featuring the great Chronixx and a vocal loop of the late great Jacob Miller. A tune to warm up those cold evenings to come (if the weather forecasters are to believed!) and one that creeps up on you slowly.

Busy Signal – Money Flow/Greetings (Ribbidibi)
Two videos in one as played by The Rt Hon David Rodigan over the past few weeks which utilise a couple of familiar rhythms from yesteryear. Especially for everyone who’s suffering with the pre xmas flu!

Sunday night dub business and sousaphones

An excellent tune as played by David Rodigan from the steel city geezer Toddla T on the mix with the excellent Suns of dub featuring Addis Pablo son of the late great Augustus. Heavyweight sunday night dub  business, and a night that feels like summer outside.

Talking of Addis, here he is onstage with The Roots with their rendition of his father’s classic “King Tubby meets the rockers uptown” with added sousaphone. Love the on-stage madness!

Lee Perry – Station Underground News – Bread
A killer from 1973 produced by Mr “light years ahead of his time” Lee Perry featuring a radio reference (“at 16,000 Kilocycles FM and 1,000 Megahertz on the ground” 00.10) and a Chi-lites sample “For God’s sake give more power to the people” at 1.49.) This tune was played on the Lee Perry special on the David Rodigan show on BBC 1 Xtra last Sunday which is available on mixcloud here. And for the original vocal cut:

Rodigan mentioned on his show that this tune doesn’t sound dated today even though it’s from 1976. We agree Roddy, this tune from Inner Circle featuring the late great Jacob Miller still sounds fresh!

The weather forecast for London tomorrow is mostly dry and cloudy. “Mister, can we have our Sun back please?”

The Treetops “It’s Raining” Trojan (1967)

How bad is this weather of late in the UK? It’s cold and wet which don’t really motive you to get out in the garden or even make you think about gardening. Don’t worry, it won’t be long until spring is here, so get out those seed catalogues, have a trip to the local garden centre and see what you need to buy for the forthcoming season.

If you’re still feeling sad, just tap “David Rodigan” into youtube and watch some of his mad sound clashes, now there’s a chap with a great sense of humour. Have a look here and fast forward to 23 minutes with Roddy giving it some real good comedy action (he does all the talkover intro’s himself, we love this cricket themed one against Ricky Trooper from KIllimanjaro). Big up the great Rodigan! I listened to a recent Resident Advisor interview with him this week and he mentioned he was in an old episode of Dr Who. How brilliant is that!

Finking ahead

Machinedrum – Gunshotta (AMIT Remix) – Ninjatune

Cheers to David Rodigan for playing these two great tunes which we’re featuring tonight. The above is a lovely bit of 2013 dub with Pablo vibes and a nice throbbing bass.

Over the last few days I’ve been thinking of what to plant for next year as it’ll be great to grow something that the family will actually eat! Saying that, spuds, onions, garlic and carrots are winners here even if they are cheaper in the shops to buy, but who cares? The back garden is nearer than the local shop and home grown veg is tens times fresher! Remember, always grow stuff that you’re definitely going to eat (not what gardening magazines tell you what you should be growing) as it’s a big waste of time and effort if not and just ends up on the compost heap!

And to go out with here’s the “cross, angry, miserable” (just like me on a monday morning) Bounty Killer on a right bonkers tip (featuring a lovely horn sample). Not one to play loud early on a Sunday morning on the ghetto blaster down the allotment.
