More from a north London garden (and France)

We’ve just received some pictures from Debby H now we’re into the autumn season. She took a photo of the red robin bush (above) in the south of France just before she left to come back to London. “I took a photo of the red robin bush in the garden there. It has grown new red leaves which I have never seen before at this time of year. It usually happens in spring and sometimes in autumn. It just goes to show that this September has been much cooler and wetter than usual in that part of the world.” She’s got a point.

Back in north London things are still looking great, with the cosmos (above) still thriving. “Not quite so many flowers but pretty good for late September” and she’s right. There’s even some volunteer/self seeded ones growing alongside the path (below). The one we bought at B&Q after being influenced by Debby’s cosmos still has flowers and some new buds.

The sedum which we’re partial to are flowering and the golden rod is looking brilliant too (below).

Excellent stuff Debby. Hope the garden continues to look great even in the next few weeks as we approach the end of the year. Cheers again Debby!

Just before we go away for a few days at the south coast, here’s some great gardening pictures from our friend in north London, Debby H. The cosmos patch is still going strong (above) and bright and colourful. The next is the cana lilly, now flowering for the first time this year (below).

“Then there’s the wonderful Ornithogalum (below) with four flowers now clearly visible.” it does look wonderful Debby!

Then there’s the sedum (above) and the great Zephyranthes Lilly flowers (below).
“And just up the road from here is a great front garden with a wonderful array of tomatoes all along the front border. There’s also sun flowers and other plants I don’t recognise.” That front garden is crazy! Love those climbing tomatoes! Cheers for sending those Debby.

Cheers to Debby H again for sending us an update on her garden. It’s looking great by the way! These two pictures of the ornithogalum are brilliant. You can see on the picture below that four flowers are now clearly visible. They are something else.

Also the cosmos (below) are still going strong and the flowers are still well colourful.

As Debby wrote “Finally, the zephyranthes bulbs are blooming. We have never managed to get more than one or two flowers in a year. Now we have four coming at once! Amazing what a change of compost will do!” That plant is great. We’ve never grown those before but probably will now as there’s all sort of varieties out there. We were influenced with the cosmos and will look into these bulbs too. That’s what gardening is all about, being inspired by what other people grow in their garden. Cheers Debby!

Cheers to Debby H for sending us some great pictures of her garden again. We’re loving the ornithogalum which has just started to flower. As she said “Hopefully this is the first of several” and we hope so too!
“The golden rod is amazing. It’s about 6 foot tall. The flowers are nearly ready now.” They are looking good. She’s been away in France for a few weeks and is just managing to get on top of the weeding. That’s it what with the weather we’ve been having, rain then sun, sun then rain. The weeds love that sort of weather they really do. “The slugs got all my rudbeckia that I planted out just before we left, the dahlia disappeared too.” Those slugs eh?
“On the other hand, the cosmos are doing well. The flowers seem larger than last year, perhaps it’s all the rain!” The cosmos do look nice, they’re an attractive flower. We’ve only grown the annual version a few years ago and they came up great and then we forgot to sow them the year after. Sadly they didn’t self seed.
“We planted phlox last spring. It didn’t do much last year but it’s starting to flower now.”
All things in garden are sadly not all rosey as the pear tree (above) is not very happy though and there doesn’t look like there’s any fruit coming on it this year sadly. As well as little black eggs on the tree, which she’s sprayed a few times, she also had to treat it for rust. We wonder what is up with the pear? The strawberry patch looks very healthy though!

A big thanks to Debby H for sending us some pictures of how her garden is getting on now that we are on the cusp of spring. The bluebells (above) look great and the strawberrries (below) are now starting to flower.

We don’t use nets on our strawberries here as we only have a few plants dotted about but it is a great thing to keep the birds and other fruit eating pests off them. Apart from a little big of slug damage to a dahlia in her garden, things are looking are looking good. Great to hear that the peonies in the garden are doing well too. We’ve got one that was overshadowed by a shrub nearby so we gave the offending shrub a good haircut and because of having more light getting to it, the peony is doing much better now.

There’s some good stuff happening indoors as well which is very interesting. The cosmos seedlings we featured here a fortnight ago are coming on a treat!

If you remember, Debby just used the whole dead heads from last year’s plant that were just scattered and covered with compost and the seeds weren’t initially separated. They are looking great! Saving your own plant’s seeds are a great way of gardening on an economical tip.

Also Debby told us “The rudbeckia has germinated although it is still tiny” and “the 12 tomatoes are gradually growing very slowly”. Our tomatoes are the same and have even thought to start another batch off as they are so slow. Usually at this time of year we have a few very leggy tomato plants ready to go out but then again we didn’t start them just after Christmas as we usually are tempted to do.

Spring is here (or just around the corner)

Cheers for Debby H for getting in touch with us today. She sent us a pic of daffodils in full bloom in a council maintained bed near her home in North London (above) and they look great!

Debby has recently started off some tomato and cosmos seeds. The cosmos seeds were straight off the flower heads of the plants they grew last year. After being left in a box all winter they were sown a couple of days ago. As she said: “We just scattered the whole dead heads on earth/compost and covered them over. We didn’t bother to try to separate out the seeds first. Within two days the little things were germinating madly!”  (Photo above). That is crazy! The seeds must have had exactly the right conditions that they loved as two days is good going for germination.

Debby told us a great tip that she used with the cosmos seedlings (pic above): “I re-planted some of them in an egg box as they were growing too densely. The idea Is that, when they are ready to go outside, I will cut the egg box into individual sections, then plant each section separately. As the egg box is made of cardboard it should bio-degrade so I won’t need to remove the seedlings from the box partitions before planting them.” That is a top idea, we have been using some biodegradable pots from B&Q but this idea is better. What we usually do with our egg boxes is chuck them on the compost heap but we reckon we’ll be putting seeds in them!

Sleet is on its way

It was the best of weeks, it was the worst of weeks. The cold is on its way in and we’ve had the booster and the flu jab and been feeling a little rough. Now the heatings gone at Weeds HQ just as sleet is forecast for tomorrow but life could be worse.

The Cosmos is still in bloom which isn’t bad as it’s December next week. How good is that? We’re also actually getting some Brussel Sprouts. Okay the slugs, snails and pigeons have taken a liking to the leaves but there are some mini sprouts there!

Years ago we had something wipe their rear end on one of our Brussel stalks (we think it was foxes) and soiled the actual sprouts and even after an intense hosing down we couldn’t get the thought out of our head so couldn’t bring ourselves to use them at the Christmas dinner so bought a stalk from the supermarket.

We told a good few people about what happened as we were so dissapointed, we even rang into a gardening radio programme who told us, “If you hose them down well and cook them then cover them in butter, they should be great to eat.”

Also a chap at work said to us not long after our mishap “I had sprouts at Christmas and I was telling my visitors around the Christmas table about your home grown sprout misfortunes”. I doubt if that story helped the Christmas dinner go down well!

Also we’ve finally got some flowers on a dwarf blackberry bush we bought a few years ago after moved to a sunnier spot thinking it’ll do better. It’s always the way isn’t it, do wrap up and keep warm this weekend!

And now the end is near (possibly)

We gave the lawn its final cut of the year yesterday. It’s the second week in November and the grass is still growing strong. Hopefully giving the lawn the last run in with the mower so late in the year will make a it a little easier when the flymo comes back out next year.

We’ll still do the old council mowing trick of “two cuts in one” in the spring. We go over the lawn with the mover blades on the highest setting (giving it less of a cut). Then give it a quick rake over (even thought you may have a grass catcher on the mower) and then go over it again with the mower blade one notch lower. It takes longer but saves less effort on the blades. And can you believe the cosmos is also still going…

Rising to the top in a cosmos style

It’s near enough November and the cosmos (we assume they’re cosmos but we can’t remember where they came from as we didn’t sow any cosmos seed unless they were part of a beebomb or a wild flower mix) is throwing out some beautiful flowers and there’s a few buds still left to open. Let’s hope the cold weather and frosts holds off.Talking of weather, we’ve had a good few inches (feet even?) of rain over the last few weeks so the pond is near enough full to the brim (above). Who would have thought it looking at the pond at the start of this year below (before we relined it here).

And just to let you know This is a Music Show 138 is up on the cloud…

What? The sun is shining again?

A massive thanks to all at the Thompson and Morgan gardening blog for the box of Beneficial Flower seeds containing all sorts of great stuff for bees and pollinators including cornflower, cosmos, dill, foxglove, catmint and wild poppy. After the last frost (have a look at this site here for estimated dates) we’ll be sowing them in the bed at the bottom of the garden. We’ll even mix some of the other box we got from the pound shop (nowhere as good as the T&M box but it was a quid!) the other week for added effect! Cheers again T&M, we’ll keep you posted!

Prompted by the person who said to us the other month: “Why don’t you write a blog and keep track of what you planted where and when”, yesterday we sowed a row of golden acre cabbages and a row of red salad bowl lettuce (both from the free seeds from Kitchen Garden Magazine). It may be a bit early but they are sown under glass. This bit of window was found in a skip many many moons ago and is still in use at Weeds HQ. Waste not want not!

And to celebrate the sun coming out again here’s a belter of a tune that’ll if all goes well will be getting an airing later this month on the next episode of Free Radio Skybird as part of a mix called “Radio Fanatics of the world unite”. The tune is from Yemanjo & Monarch Duo called Roma (Yemanjo remix) on Jumpsuit Records. Any record label that describes itself as a “curation project of The Polish Ambassador and his cohort of scientists, spirit animals and vibe consultants” is alright by us! May the sun shine on all day.
