If you want to hear more of the show, ten of the latest Imaginary Stations episodes are up online here at our Mixcloud. The show is also looking for some financial help to cover the production and transmission costs so we can continue to transmit on shortwave, more on that here:
Yesterday our good radio friend in Cincinnati, Justin Patrick Moore tipped us off that Vicki Bennett from People like us was doing a show onWFMU. It’s now available via listen again here(The show named “February 14th, 2024: This Is Bardcore, This Is Barcode, This is the Pooless Flute”).
As you can imagine there were some crazy records played, bizzare mash ups and some “odd sausages” (as an old workmate used to say). Here’s two tunes that we’ve never heard before that caught our attention. The first is Polo & Pan with Nana (above) and it’s a bit of left-field pop on the catchy, happy tip. And we’ve just found out it’s sampled off this tune below from Os Tincoãs another band we have had to research. And an interesting band they were.
The second is Keezo Kane with Ga Ga Ga(James Brown Steppers Mix) which is great stuff. If you’re a lover of some real musical madness do check the show out. Cheers Justin for letting us know about it.
This afternoon we were listening to a mixtape on Radio is a Foreign Countrywhich is a wonderful radio show broadcast on WRMI (Mondays 0300-0500 UTC on 9395 kHz) also it’s own internet radio station and website. This is how they describe what they do, “An endless stream of obscure (and mostly retro) global music and audio ephemera rarely heard outside their home region.” This tune above by Los Zheros called Para Chachita was heard on the mixtape section called “Peruvian 45s” and is a corker! The whole mixtape is great in fact. Explore some worldwide mix goodness here.
A big hi goes out to Stevyn from the great fanzine/website Iron Feather Journal for sending us this picture above of the first issue of Steroid Abuse up on the wall of his Nandalow Bookshop in Hokkaido, Japan. “The pic is a view into the bookshop, notice at the top of the door (top left) a poetry paper scroll, also featured in the drawing of the inside view (pic below)” “The pictures hanging include the old late King of Thailandwho loved dogs and Richard Francis Burton’s tomb in Kew Gardens”. We love that duck!
Do have a look a the Iron Feather Journal Website herefor all sorts of interesting stuff. Thanks Stevyn as well for all of the support for Weeds, Madtone and Steroid Abuse over the years!
Also here’s a wonderful couple of tunes that were on a free record with Iron Feather Journal 17 many moons ago which we’re sure we bought at Atlas Records in Soho. We could be wrong as it could have been by mail order but it was a long long time ago and our memory is a bit shot here. Both great tunes but we do love that Laura track.
Also a mention of the great project Stevyn is also involved in which is the Pink Floyd Breakfast Remix here on Towne Club Records, Japan. Cheers for all your support and big up IFJ, the Nandalow Radio show and the bookshop!
While searching through those old gramaphone records the other night for a forthcoming shortwave mix we came across this tune called Texas Yellow by Urchin which we had well forgotten about. It’s a long one but a tune that you can really get lost in. It was nice to rediscover it and there’s even a Aquilegia named after it too!
This weekend the Imaginary Stations crew present another installment of WDWD – Off the Map Radio. Programme 2 in the series will be going out to Europe via the services of Shortwave Gold on Sunday 28th January 2024 at 1000/1400 hrs UTC on 6160 kHz and then at 2100 UTC on 3975 kHz (ionosphere permitting).
Enjoy more journey related tunes and some about locations and place names and the show also includes a mix from One Deck Pete called “You take the high road” including tunes by LJ SEB, Cornershop, Soul Sugar and Zeb The Spy from Cairo.
Then on early Monday 29th January 2024 there’s KPET for all pet lovers out there at 0300 UTC on 9395 kHz via WRMI. They’ll be songs for your cat, budgie and guinea pig alongside reviews of dry cat food, dog biscuits and hamster chews. It will be a great show so tune in.
Imaginary Stations takes to the internet airwaves from his Monday on Electromagnic Radio. It looks a great station with lots of great shows here.
Times are Mondays at 2pm and on a Saturday at 7pm both UK time. Tune in and enjoy the first show which is Radio Lavalamp but that’s after exploring all the other musical possibilities that are on the site. Enjoy the diverse range of musical enjoyment on Electromagnetic Radio.
Another great tune found whilst researching a forthcoming shortwave radio mix, a very summery sounding tune from a little while back, complete with a backwards tracking part in it. Cornershop with England is a Garden. Wonderful!
And talking of backwards tracking, check the B side of this one which we’ve featured a few times here so why not again. Burt Walters on the vocals with Honey Love, the great upsetter on the mix. Love the sound of the vocal track tape being rewound to start in the right place. Crazy!
If you’ve got a shortwave radio (or fancy a go on a Software Defined Radio aka SDR radio lilke this one here) there’s an Imaginary Stations show called The Numbers Station going out to Europe via Shortwave Gold this Sunday 7th January 2024 at 1000/1400 hrs UTC on 6160 kHz and then on 3975 kHz at 2100 UTC.
As you expect there’s an hour of great tunes that feature numbers and also at 18 minutes in is a mix from One Deck Pete aptly called “The Numbers Game” that has tunes from Kieran Mahon, Sonmi 451, Paper Sailboat, AK and Madtone. Tune in!
Also numbers related is an interesting youtube we’ve posted up before but worth posting again called Which Mysterious Numbers Stations Were Used In Music? from the great Ringway Manchester. Excellent stuff and cheers for mentioning Madtone!
