The radio dial is a compass…

This afternoon we were listening to a mixtape on Radio is a Foreign Country which is a wonderful radio show broadcast on WRMI (Mondays 0300-0500 UTC on 9395 kHz) also it’s own internet radio station and website. This is how they describe what they do, “An endless stream of obscure (and mostly retro) global music and audio ephemera rarely heard outside their home region.” This tune above by Los Zheros called Para Chachita was heard on the mixtape section called “Peruvian 45s” and is a corker! The whole mixtape is great in fact. Explore some worldwide mix goodness here.

Big shout to all the IFJ crew in Japan

A big hi goes out to Stevyn from the great fanzine/website Iron Feather Journal for sending us this picture above of the first issue of Steroid Abuse up on the wall of his Nandalow Bookshop in Hokkaido, Japan. “The pic is a view into the bookshop, notice at the top of the door (top left) a poetry paper scroll, also featured in the drawing of the inside view (pic below)” “The pictures hanging include the old late King of Thailand who loved dogs and Richard Francis Burton’s tomb in Kew Gardens”. We love that duck!

Do have a look a the Iron Feather Journal Website here for all sorts of interesting stuff. Thanks Stevyn as well for all of the support for Weeds, Madtone and Steroid Abuse over the years!

Also here’s a wonderful couple of tunes that were on a free record with Iron Feather Journal 17 many moons ago which we’re sure we bought at Atlas Records in Soho. We could be wrong as it could have been by mail order but it was a long long time ago and our memory is a bit shot here. Both great tunes but we do love that Laura track.

Also a mention of the great project Stevyn is also involved in which is the Pink Floyd Breakfast Remix here on Towne Club Records, Japan. Cheers for all your support and big up IFJ, the Nandalow Radio show and the bookshop!

A tune from yesteryear

While searching through those old gramaphone records the other night for a forthcoming shortwave mix we came across this tune called Texas Yellow by Urchin which we had well forgotten about. It’s a long one but a tune that you can really get lost in. It was nice to rediscover it and there’s even a Aquilegia named after it too!

Psychic TV meets Frederick Horniman at SE23

We popped into Hornimans today and had a butchers at their garden and their collection of herbs and healing plants (well it was more about reading the plant labels as most of them were still in hibernation but very interesting all the same.)

After being outside we took a trip into the music room and saw the Yamaha DX7 synth in there with the Psychic TV sticker on it again. It’s been there for years but we forgotten all about it until today but does anyone know anything about its origins?

Dub on the buses

Here’s a tune for this sunny but cold Sunday. It’s from a good few years ago from Delhi 2 Dublin and it’s called Get on The Bus. The tune was found last week whilst researching a shortwave mix. It’s a wonderful tune and very dubwise.

Talking of On the buses, we’ve been alerted to a really good cafe by Waterloo Bus Garage called The Bus Cafe. We’ve never been ourselves as we’ve only found out about it but we will, you can be sure of it. It looks great, meals are cheap, you will be sharing a table with a bus driver and if you’re that way inclined you can even play a game of pool with one (winner stays on, of course). As it says on Trip Advisor “Good food and (a) nice no-frills experience”, well if that ain’t a good enough recomendation we don’t know what is. Big up all the bus driver (and conductor) lunchtime crew.

Culture – Two Sevens Clash
“I take a ride sometimesOn Pennoverland and BranxAnd sometimes I ride on bus X-82, say what?”

“The bus reference is especially important, as the album’s liner notes say that (Joseph) Hill got the idea for Two Sevens Clash while riding public transportation.”

(Imaginary) Radio is a (Electro) magnetic thing

Imaginary Stations takes to the internet airwaves from his Monday on Electromagnic Radio. It looks a great station with lots of great shows here.

Times are Mondays at 2pm and on a Saturday at 7pm both UK time. Tune in and enjoy the first show which is Radio Lavalamp but that’s after exploring all the other musical possibilities that are on the site. Enjoy the diverse range of musical enjoyment on Electromagnetic Radio.

We must remember this is a gardening blog (or is it?)

Another great tune found whilst researching a forthcoming shortwave radio mix, a very summery sounding tune from a little while back, complete with a backwards tracking part in it. Cornershop with England is a Garden. Wonderful!

And talking of backwards tracking, check the B side of this one which we’ve featured a few times here so why not again. Burt Walters on the vocals with Honey Love, the great upsetter on the mix.  Love the sound of the vocal track tape being rewound to start in the right place. Crazy!

Tunes for a Thursday

Through all of the researching of the Abedare Rockers cassette a few great gems have come to the surface like this excellent track from Debra Keese and Black Five with Travelling produced by Scratch The Upsetter. And you want the toast, here it is! Top tunes galore!

Aberdare Rockers revived!

A big thanks to Debby H for sticking the audio of the excellent Aberdare Rockers cassette tape online on Mixcloud. We haven’t heard it for many moons and it is sounding excellent! Cheers to Debby H, Rhyhm Doctor, Karl S and Pete R for their valuable help sussing these tunes out. Any amends or misnamed please let us know.

Massive thanks to Debby H again for finding this classic cassette and for transfering it and sticking it up on Mixcloud. This mix will be on play again at Weeds HQ for the rest of the week! The MP3 can be downloaded here.
