Dahlias during the day, Perseids later on tonight

Big shout to our good mate Marc B for passing on a tuber of this lovely dahlia earlier this year. Look at it now! Ok it’s a bit thirsty looking and is a bit droopy but don’t we all feel like that when the temperature’s as mad as this?

Remember it’s the peak of a meteor shower tonight (or thereabouts.) So if you’re thinking of sitting out the back later on (it’s far too hot to sit in or even for trying to get to sleep!) have a look at this site here (and their twitter account here) it’s “Dead good” as they say. We’ve had many a happy evening looking at their twitter feed, looking up at the night sky, looking at their twitter feed, looking up at the night sky (Ad infinitum).

A shortwave radio weekend

It’s a double dose of DJ Frederick‘s radio projects over the shortwaves this weekend. This Saturday 8th of August 2020 there’s the 2019 remix broadcast of Free Radio Skybird via Radio Onda in Europe on 5940 kHz at 1800 UTC (1900 UK time.) Listen out for One Deck Pete’s Sounds of the shortwave at 24.50 minutes in. If you haven’t a shortwave radio set tune in here to experience the sound of shortwave on an online software defined radio or listen in studio quality audio via Radio Onda‘s website here. 

On Sunday 9th August 2020 (and repeated the week after) at 2200 UTC (11pm UK time) on 3955 kHz via Channel 292 is Radio Lavalamp. The transmission will feature in One Deck Pete with a mix at 23 minutes in called The Purple Nucleus of Creation 002 featuring some great tunes from Drowsii, Nayl, Tabitha Project, Seventh Soul & Homayoun Shajarian and Camille Murray. This blog post has been written whilst listening to this week’s This is a music show. We love the intro, over Max Greger and his orchestra’s Never Can Say Goodbye we hear Your Host with “Lot’s of different countries (played this week) including Germany, Brazil, The Cayman islands, Haiti, France…” Great stuff!

And we also love this tune by The (Fabulous) Wailers from Seattle (not Kingston, JA.) that was played at the beginning. That’s what’s great about the show, there’s always something great that you’d never heard before. Big shout to Your Host!

On a gardening note, we nipped out to the raised beds this morning to thin out the carrots (below) as it’s a bit of a jungle out there. We’re proud as punch as these were put in at the start of lockdown. We also found out the hard way that it was tons easier pulling out the carrots in the beds with the bought multi-purpose compost in them rather than the ones with London clay. We will rectify that come the spring!

We reckon that the carrots we pulled this morning were the early nantes free with Kitchen Garden magazine pre-lockdown in January. We’ll be getting some of them next year for sure. Anyone else having a bit of success with their veg? Do send us your pics! onedeck (@) gmail (.) com.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring (in lockdown)

It’s funny how the days all melt into one during lockdown but certain days bring certain pleasures. Yesterday we spotted our first courgette/zucchini flower even though the plant was sown very late as the ones we sown earlier amounted to nothing. We’re going to be keeping this one watered and fed a lot so we can get some decent fruits.

And after a delve into the compost in the raised beds (making sure any small marble sized spuds were covered over as they turn green in the sun making them poisonous) we got a nice amount of small new spuds!

And we found these two fibreglass tubs in the street to be chucked out for the binmen. They’re about a foot high and needed a wash and a lick of grey paint (which we found in a half opened tin under the stairs, we didn’t even know we had it) and they are as good as new. There you go, something good to report in lockdown!

Here’s a recording off an online SDR of today’s One Deck Pete’s “Tunes to cheer you up” which was transmitted on Free Radio Skybird via Channel 292. This is the fifth episode in the series and this week it’s an exclusive of an early mix of a new tune from Jazz’min & Madtone with “Return to the branches”. Apologies for the non Hi-Fi quality but that’s what you get with that wireless thingy.

This Sunday 21st June sees the last in the present schedule of DJ Frederick’s Free Radio Skybird until the autumn. So tune in at 1100 UTC on 6070 kHz in the 49 Metre shortwave band via Channel 292 and if you haven’t got a suitable radio it can also be heard on the SDR link on their site here.

Here’s today’s recording straight off the shortwaves of One Deck Pete’s “Tunes to cheer you up (3)”. The third tune in the series is Omeria with True Colors on the excellent Cafe De Anatolia. The label serves up some quality stuff, unlike radio conditions today!

Live from the town and comfrey show

Comfrey liquid, don’t we all just love it? Looks awful don’t it? Well imagine the smell is about 1000 times worst as how it looks and you’re close. Drain out the liquid from the above abyss into a bottle then transfer a capful into a watering can and add some H20 and you’ll have some top end plant feed, we kid you not. As well as being bunged into a 1980’s Boot’s homebrew bucket we’re use a leaf or two to put below tomato plants (and other seedlings) before they go in the ground. A very versatile plant and the bees don’t half love it!

The actual plants where we’re taking the leaves from are taking a hammering at the moment (and it’s not even June!) but they don’t seem to mind. If you’re going to get some go for the “Bocking 14” variety. As the song goes: comfrey, what is it good for?
