XRPT on your RADIO

Here’s the audio of yesterday’s transmission from Imaginary Stations, a show called XRPT, a compilation of Imaginary Stations shows past, present and future. It’s an interesting listen and includes contributions from all the crew, DJ Frederick, Justin Patrick Moore and at 21 minutes in is a mix from One Deck Pete called Bits and Pieces (nothing to do with Smiley Miley and The Radio 1 Roadshow of course!)

From the lakes to across the pond

A big shout to our good friend across the pond Justin Patrick Moore for sending us pictures of his indoor plants that are now being transferred back into the house after a summer outside in the garden. That’s a great load of plants there.

As we’ve mentioned before, we’re not the best at keeping houseplants here but are getting better with the watering/non-watering days. Great pictures Justin!

Also here’s a great video with Justin giving an interesting talk about his excellent book The Radio Phonics Laboratory, more about that here. If you love radio and electronic music do give it a watch and get the book as it’s a great read.

More bass, more drums and more harp please

Over the years we’ve discovered some great reggae tunes featuring some strange bed fellows instrument-wise including (above) this bit of banjo dub by Andy’s All-Stars called Banjo Serenade (Cheers Steve Barker for playing this). And it was only a couple of weeks we found out about the great  Alex Porteus/Jah Bottle Head (actually caught in action using said instrument at 18 seconds in and a few more times below).

And tonight we have found some harp dub. The below is from Lo Free Meditation, T-key Free Meditation, Ha Lan Leduc and called Hola Harp part 1. Wonderful stuff!

Dub dreams can come true

While going through some tracks this evening we found this excellent dub from Leo James called Daydream In Dub featuring one Ed Gooden.

It’s brilliant stuff and doesn’t even feel like the seven minute track it is. When we saw the length of the track we initially thought “that’s going to go on for a bit” but the truth of the matter is it could go on for much longer for us here. Wonderful stuff from way back in 2016. The 12″ is £34 on discogs which is a bit out of our reach but a super tune anyway.

And another slumber related tune, this time from the great “Sleepy” himself Horace Andy with Krak in Dub from Paris with “Stop borrow dub”. It’s on an uptempo tip and one to be played loud!

So nice the intstrumental has got to be played too!

In an international instrumental style

Here’s the audio of yesterday’s Shortwave Gold broadcast of Skybird Radio International on 3975/6160 kHz.

The show is all about grooves from around this world of ours but this time it’s about the instrumental. There’s some wonderful eclectic music in a true worldwide style as usual from all of the Imaginary Stations DJ’s including DJ Frederick and Justin Patrick Moore.

At 29 seconds in is a mix from One Deck Pete, here’s the tracklistings:
Madtone – Diamonds in the sky (excerpt)
Hermanos Gutiérrez – Cumbia Lunar
Mouth – Ooh, Ahh, Yeah
BackYard Riddims/Tommy Khosla (Sitar) – SchaantiDub
Bob Keene Orchestra – Comin’ on Again
The Supersonics – Second Fiddle

Have a listen to the show as it’s brilliant and you’re welcome to add the singing bits yourself!

More things we didn’t know part 24

We’re just putting another shortwave mix together and picked this tune from Tommy McCook & The Supersonics called Second Fiddle. It starts off with a “Popeye the sailor man” type motif then into a very interesting rock steady number.

Then we found out by accident that The Incredible String Band did a cover of it. Well we never knew that! There’s a lot we don’t know we reckon, music is one big can of beans.

We never knew that. Part 303

Reggae is one of those genres that if you think you know a little, you’ll always be suprised. By pure fluke we found the above tune from Ranking Toyan – Kill No Man whilst looking for another Toyan tune on youtube. We then remembered the horn version on the LP Aggrovators Meet The Revolutionaries we bought in a second hand shop many moons ago and used the title track on a “Radio Clarion Vs KDUB” shortwave mix. That thing called the internet can be great sometimes!
