Now here’s a view!

Cheers to our man in the Lake District Rich R, for sending this wonderful picture from when he visited Hawes in North Yorkshire last week. As he wrote “This is on the main street!” Blimmin’ eck, what a view. Beats the usual McDonalds, Asda and the like and imagine that as the view out of your front room window. Excellent stuff Rich.

Tie a yellow ribbon around the strawberry tree

We’d like to think that we knew our local area well but last Friday just around the corner we spied a woman getting fruits from a tree and eating them. It looked like she was a gardener on her way to work as she had a pair of loppers in the panniers of her push bike and was wearing some overalls and a pair of steel toecaps.

We initially walked past but did a U turn and asked “What fruit are they?” as we were so curious as we walk past the tree on a near daily basis. She replied still eating the fruits and not really turning around “It’s a strawberry tree, the fruits are lovely but do go for the red ones as they’re the ripest”. Because we spied the loppers and that she was wearing toecaps we had a daft idea that we could trust this person. We didn’t worry we may be sitting on the loo a few hours later or possibly in Lewisham A&E, so we sampled one of the fruits and do you know what, they’re very pleasant and taste like, Strawberries.

A quick search on the web brought us more about the plant Arbutus unedo, it’s the national tree of Italy (as the leaves are green, its got white flowers has red berries, the colours of the Italian flag) and sometimes known as Killarney strawberry tree. It looks like when they are established the tree is quite hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -10°C.

We’ve also just found online a recipe for a strawberry tree crumble cake which looks great here so we have to strongly resist the urge of carrying down a pair of stepladders and a dessert bowl to said tree or we may get done for filching of fruit (AKA Scrumping)!

A journey through the cosmos

Big thanks to Debby H in north London who has sent us another great photograph of her cosmos patch that is looking brilliant even at the end of October. As Debby wrote “My cosmos plants are still producing an unbelievable amount of flowers for the time of year, and there’s more buds still coming! This is very similar to one that I sent to you previously but I have attached it just to show you the amount of flowers that are still blooming.” They certainly are blooming. Cheers Debby.

Dub Solidarity in south London

AUDIOTOPIA

THE SOLIDARITY SOUND SYSTEM

26 OCT 19:00-23:00

TACO! 2 Cygnet Square, THAMESMEAD SE2 9FA

To coincide with Gusty Ferro‘s Hello Neighbours, The Solidarity Sound System presents an evening of dub sounds and sonic experimentation.

From reverbs, echoes, and classic dub tunes, to low-frequency bass and experimental electronic aural affects, dub’s vast musical influence includes Hip Hop, Techno, D&B, Jungle, Drill and more.  But Dub’s wider social legacy is its construction of sonic and social free spaces, that parallel its emphasis on the modification, reuse and alteration of sound. DJs and performers include: Gusty Ferro, members of the Electronic Audio Club, Jesse Yuen, Florent Caillibotte, One Deck Pete, Diet Cola Sounds with more tbc.

The Solidarity Sound System is a community sound system built by members of RTM and the wider community in 2021 with the support of artist Clara Smith and funded by Three Rivers Bexley.

And in the afternoon of the 26th, Jesse Yeun will be presenting his excellent North Of The River Swan show live from TACO! from 4-6 pm with One Deck Pete playing a few records and having a bit of a natter. Tune in next Saturday at 4ish on the listen live link on this page here. This tune below may be played or may not.

We were going to post up an episode of North Of The River Swan but here’s another programme presented by Jesse called Golden Apples in Dub which features a great version excursion of “Baby I Love you so”/”King Tubby meets the rockers uptown” featuring a few different tunes we’d never heard of before including this one which is excellent!

Then after that feature ends is this wonderful tune from Bandulu which we still have on a John Peel show cassette somewhere. We forgotten how good it is and it was nice to hear it again. Tune in to RTM FM next week at 4pm.

From the lakes to across the pond

A big shout to our good friend across the pond Justin Patrick Moore for sending us pictures of his indoor plants that are now being transferred back into the house after a summer outside in the garden. That’s a great load of plants there.

As we’ve mentioned before, we’re not the best at keeping houseplants here but are getting better with the watering/non-watering days. Great pictures Justin!

Also here’s a great video with Justin giving an interesting talk about his excellent book The Radio Phonics Laboratory, more about that here. If you love radio and electronic music do give it a watch and get the book as it’s a great read.

The day the lakes stood still

Cheers to Rich R up in the Lake District for sending us some rather bonkers aurora pics from the other Thursday. Crazy, crazy stuff indeed!

Seeing this cosmic coloured sky, we wouldn’t be suprised if there’s also reports of a Gort-like robot out of The Day The Earth Stood Still seen walking down (carrying a large tote bag of course) to the Village Shop to get some lovely home-made confectionery before he starts his night-shift guarding flying saucers and the like. Cheers Rich for the wonderful pictures. All we can say here is wow!

More bass, more drums and more harp please

Over the years we’ve discovered some great reggae tunes featuring some strange bed fellows instrument-wise including (above) this bit of banjo dub by Andy’s All-Stars called Banjo Serenade (Cheers Steve Barker for playing this). And it was only a couple of weeks we found out about the great  Alex Porteus/Jah Bottle Head (actually caught in action using said instrument at 18 seconds in and a few more times below).

And tonight we have found some harp dub. The below is from Lo Free Meditation, T-key Free Meditation, Ha Lan Leduc and called Hola Harp part 1. Wonderful stuff!
